Real Madrid Star Inherits Messi's Iconic No. 10 Jersey for Argentina National Team

Recently acquired Real Madrid player Franco Mastantuono wore Lionel Messi's legendary number 10 jersey during Argentina's encounter with Ecuador.

The atmosphere was electric in Buenos Aires on Thursday evening as Messi participated in his last competitive match for Argentina at home. The eight-time Ballon d'Or recipient scored twice in La Albiceleste's commanding 3–0 triumph over Venezuela, achieving the conclusion he had "always envisioned" in his homeland.

This fixture also marked the conclusion of Messi's storied World Cup Qualifying campaign; the 38-year-old veteran did not travel to Ecuador with the Argentine squad, making his iconic No. 10 jersey available.

While initial reports suggested that Lionel Scaloni had selected former Atlanta United midfielder Thiago Almada for this privilege, the number was ultimately given to 18-year-old Mastantuono. The Real Madrid prospect had worn 21 in the previous match against Venezuela, but was now granted the opportunity to temporarily inherit Argentina's No. 10 shirt from one of football's all-time greats.

Mastantuono is familiar with wearing the number 10 for Argentina. The attacking midfielder donned this jersey number while representing La Albiceleste's U-20 national team.

However, wearing it for the senior squad represented a significant milestone for Mastantuono, accompanied by considerable expectations. The jersey's heritage and weight of responsibility are particularly intense for a young player, despite Argentina having already secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Mastantuono entered La Albiceleste's fixture against Ecuador with only two senior international appearances under his belt. He continues to seek his inaugural goal or assist at the national team level.

Naturally, Messi will reclaim the number 10 when he next represents Argentina. The Barcelona icon may have said goodbye to competitive matches on Argentine soil, but he remains the captain of the national team as they pursue consecutive World Cup championships.
