What Type of Player Is Diomande?
Diomande's ascent to the elite level has been nothing short of meteoric. The teenager only made his professional debut 16 months ago—coming off the bench for Leganés against Real Madrid at the Bernabéu, of all venues, and exchanging shirts with Mbappé. It may feel premature to say Diomande's journey has gone full circle, but it's a pleasing piece of symmetry that will likely become part of his story should he flourish in Madrid.
Following a move to RB Leipzig last summer, Diomande made an immediate impact in Germany as a blistering, two-footed winger capable of causing havoc for defenders on either side.
The 19-year-old claimed the Bundesliga's Rookie of the Year award in 2025–26, having netted 12 goals and contributed eight assists as Leipzig wrapped up third place in the standings. A maiden senior hat-trick in a 6–0 thrashing of Eintracht Frankfurt last December put the world on notice, with the Ivorian—still just 18 at the time—becoming the second-youngest player in Bundesliga history to score a treble in a single match.
Beyond his goal-scoring threat, it is Diomande's dribbling numbers that truly distinguish him. Ranked as the fifth-fastest player in the German top flight last season, only Lamine Yamal surpassed the youngster's tally of 118 successful take-ons across Europe's top five leagues in 2025–26.
At the 2026 World Cup, he managed just one assist across four appearances but was awarded Superior Player of the Match in Côte d'Ivoire's victory over Ecuador, offering glimpses of his ability to electrify crowds throughout North America.
How Could Real Madrid Line Up Next Season?
Diomande's relatively brief first-team career has seen him operate within a 4-3-3 setup at both RB Leipzig and with Côte d'Ivoire, deployed as a wide attacker on either the left or right flank.
The 19-year-old's adaptability will be a significant asset for Mourinho, who is acquiring a player capable of starting or providing cover across at least two positions. The challenge lies in integrating him alongside the club's other marquee names.
Madrid have notoriously found it difficult to extract the best from Mbappé and Vinícius Jr. simultaneously, while Bellingham has openly expressed how his own positional flexibility has at times worked against him.
