Real Madrid vs. Barcelona: Who Faces the Tougher Road in the Next Five La Liga Clashes?

Real Madrid vs. Barcelona: Who Faces the Tougher Road in the Next Five La Liga Clashes?

What was once a thrilling La Liga title race has become little more than a ceremonial procession for Barcelona as the season enters its final stretch.

Real Madrid's resurgence ahead of the March international break breathed new life into the battle for the Spanish title, setting up what looked to be a nail-biting finish for the second straight season. Only four points divided the fierce rivals, and a potentially decisive Clásico was on the horizon.

However, Los Blancos' woeful displays against Mallorca and Girona effectively deflated the race, all but gifting Barcelona the championship. The Catalans now sit six points ahead of their fierce rivals, and a victory over Espanyol would stretch that advantage to nine.

Suddenly, Barcelona's upcoming fixtures are more about when they can seal the title, while Real Madrid's remaining games simply offer a chance for the club to salvage some dignity before the curtain falls.

Barcelona have only a game in hand until Saturday, when they square off against Espanyol in what is always a heated Catalan derby. Coming off a crushing Champions League defeat to Atlético Madrid midweek and with their focus on the crucial second leg, the reigning Spanish champions may find this local rivalry trickier than expected.

Fixtures against Celta Vigo and Getafe — two sides that have beaten Real Madrid this season — also pose their own challenges, though Hansi Flick's squad at full strength should be more than capable of handling both opponents.

Osasuna is yet another team that managed to get the better of Real Madrid this season, demonstrating their quality regardless of their league standing. Still, facing Barcelona is an entirely different proposition — one the club has managed to overcome just once in its last 12 encounters with the Catalans.

Then comes the third El Clásico of 2025–26, though with Real Madrid so far adrift in the title race, little more than pride will be at stake. Even a victory over their fierce rivals would not realistically give the team any genuine hope of claiming the trophy.

Real Madrid's next La Liga outing comes against 15th-place Alavés, a side that should pose little threat to Arbeloa's men. A trip to Real Betis, however, is a considerably tougher assignment. Los Blancos have not claimed a win at the Estadio Benito Villamarín since 2021.

After that comes a demanding journey to Catalonia, where the 15-time European champions will face Espanyol and then Barcelona in consecutive matches. Manolo González's side has yet to win a single game in 2026, and will essentially serve as a high-profile warm-up ahead of El Clásico.

Just weeks ago, Los Blancos saw their showdown with Barcelona as a pivotal title opportunity. Three points against the defending champions would have heaped enormous pressure on Flick's side to finish the season without a slip. Yet a string of costly errors from Real Madrid has rendered the much-anticipated fixture largely irrelevant in the hunt for the Spanish title.

Following their visit to the Camp Nou, the 15-time European champions head back to the Bernabéu to face relegation-threatened Real Oviedo. Depending on how El Clásico unfolds, the reception awaiting them could be a frosty one.
