As Arsenal hover around Vinícius Júnior, Real Madrid have reportedly eased their position in ongoing contract negotiations, presenting their star winger with an "enhanced" offer on Wednesday.
The contract extension of Vinícius Jr, who remains tied to the 15-time European champions until the conclusion of next season, has been a source of tension since January 2025. Talks have previously yielded minimal progress, with both sides appearing reluctant to meet in the middle over financial disputes.
Vinícius Jr was believed to be pursuing a record-breaking salary of approximately €30 million ($35 million) annually, a figure Real Madrid were never eager to sanction, given the knock-on effects it would have on the club's wage hierarchy once Jude Bellingham and others came up for renewal.
Recent reports suggested Los Blancos put forward a new deal valued at €22 million ($25 million), yet even that figure failed to secure the Brazilian's commitment. A widespread belief had grown across the Spanish capital that Real Madrid would not concede any further ground — but they apparently have.
The Athletic reports the club has now tabled yet another improved proposal following discussions between Vinícius Jr's representatives, general director José Ángel Sánchez and chief scout Juni Calafat in Madrid on Wednesday. The precise value of the new offer remains undisclosed, though ESPN reports it boosted the forward's base salary along with certain performance-related variables.
BBC Sport adds that Real Madrid are anticipating a response from Vinícius Jr within "hours rather than days."
A Breakthrough Could Finally Be Imminent
Following the Vinícius Jr contract saga over the past 19 months had been a largely uneventful exercise before this summer. Both parties publicly declared their desire to finalize an agreement, yet neither side ever compromised sufficiently to make it happen.
Meaningful updates were few and far between, and when they did emerge, they consistently reflected the same financial impasse. With ample time remaining to reach a resolution, talks stalled throughout 2024–25 and again into 2025–26.
Negotiations appeared set to stall once more, particularly after Real Madrid splashed out heavily during the summer transfer window to acquire Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konaté, Denzel Dumfries, Marc Cucurella and Carlos Espí. The Spanish giants also reportedly struck a deal for Yan Diomande worth as much as €140 million ($161.6 million).
Yet Arsenal's pursuit of Vinícius Jr appears to have galvanized Los Blancos into action, with reports suggesting they have raised their offers twice within two days in a bid to secure their No. 7. The window to reach an agreement now feels critically narrow.
Should Vinícius Jr ultimately commit to extending his time at the Bernabéu, many will point to Wednesday's discussions as the decisive turning point — one that, ironically, coincided with the club reportedly splashing a massive fee to bring Diomande on board.
Did Increased Pressure Break Down Real Madrid's Resolve?
It is no secret that Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez is a notoriously firm negotiator. The Spaniard famously refused to meet the demands of club icons Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos, allowing both to depart the Spanish capital without new deals in 2018 and 2021 respectively.
Pérez also parted ways with Mesut Özil in 2014 and Luka Modrić in 2025 despite both midfielders expressing a wish to stay. The prevailing sentiment has always been that no individual is bigger than the club — not even legendary head coach Carlo Ancelotti.
Those same principles appeared to govern the Vinícius Jr situation throughout the past year and a half of negotiations. Despite the 26-year-old's impressive track record — which includes two Champions League triumphs and 128 goals for Real Madrid — he was not granted the extraordinary salary he sought, even as the clock ticked down.
Yet the moment Arsenal came calling, Los Blancos began sweetening their offers for Vinícius Jr — whose potential switch to north London always seemed unlikely, though not entirely out of the question.
There is still ground to cover before a new deal is finalized, but Vinícius Jr is undoubtedly in a stronger position, having successfully pushed Real Madrid to move — something they rarely do. All signs appear to be aligning for the dynamic winger to continue his role on Los Blancos' left flank.
The 15-time European champions will then need to hope that this deviation from their typically rigid approach pays dividends — otherwise, they will have no one else to hold accountable.
