Real Madrid's Brazilian Star Shatters World Cup Dreams With Devastating Injury

Real Madrid's Brazilian Star Shatters World Cup Dreams With Devastating Injury

Éder Militão is set to undergo surgery for his latest hamstring problem and will miss the World Cup as a result, according to a new report.

The injury-plagued center back suffered another setback during Real Madrid's 2–1 victory over Deportivo Alavés last Tuesday, being substituted in first-half stoppage time after aggravating his hamstring once more. He had already been sidelined for four months this season after tearing a muscle in his left leg.

Militão was quickly ruled out for the rest of Madrid's season, but was initially anticipated to be fit for Brazil at this summer's World Cup. However, fresh information from journalist Miguel Ángel Díaz suggests the injury is more serious than originally believed.

The report indicates that the scar tissue from Militão's earlier injury this season has torn open again, requiring surgical intervention. As a result, the defender will be unable to recover in time for the World Cup, which kicks off on June 11, and is instead expected to return at the start of the 2026–27 season.

The news is a crushing blow for both Madrid and Brazil, with the latter already missing Rodrygo for the tournament and anxiously monitoring the fitness of exciting winger Estêvão following his own recent hamstring setback.

Militão's Injury Curse Continues

Éder Militão

Sympathy must go out to the unfortunate Militão. The center back's injury troubles began during the 2023–24 campaign when he ruptured his ACL and missed 45 games for club and country, before suffering a recurrence of the same devastating injury the following season.

A second ACL tear restricted Militão to just 17 appearances for Madrid in 2024–25, and his fitness struggles have continued this term. As noted, he missed four months and 24 Madrid matches earlier this season and now faces yet another prolonged spell on the sidelines.

While no specific return date has been confirmed, Militão will understandably be dreading the outlook. Another extended absence from the game appears increasingly inevitable.

Brazil Boasts Depth to Handle Militão Absence

Gabriel

Fortunately for Brazil, the squad is well-stocked with central defensive talent. Militão was not even guaranteed a starting spot in North America, given the exceptional quality available at the heart of defense.

Arsenal's Gabriel is expected to be an automatic starter, as is the experienced 104-cap Paris Saint-Germain defender Marquinhos. Juventus's Bremer, who has also dealt with injury problems this season, provides yet another high-quality option for Ancelotti.

Flamengo veteran Danilo is also likely to feature this summer, while Lucas Beraldo, Vitor Reis, Léo Pereira and Roger Ibañez are all vying for a place in the Seleção squad.
