Real Madrid's Champions League Dreams in Jeopardy as Key Star Sidelined for Bayern Munich Showdown

Real Madrid's Champions League Dreams in Jeopardy as Key Star Sidelined for Bayern Munich Showdown

Real Madrid may have to navigate their upcoming seven to eight fixtures without goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who has sustained a quadriceps injury according to medical examinations.

Courtois was substituted during the interval of Tuesday's Champions League victory over Manchester City, with Andriy Lunin taking over for the remainder and recording three crucial stops.

The Ukrainian shot-stopper is now expected to guard the goal until May arrives.

Thibaut Courtois

On Thursday, Real Madrid officially announced Courtois' injury assessment: "After medical examinations conducted today on our player Thibaut Courtois by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a muscle injury in the rectus femoris of his right quadriceps. His recovery will be closely monitored."

The club provided no specific timeline, but a subsequent MARCA report suggested approximately six weeks for recovery. The Athletic indicated it would be "at minimum" six weeks, with some club sources fearing up to two complete months.

This sidelines Courtois for the remainder of March and all of April, during which Los Blancos face up to eight fixtures across two tournaments.

Beyond the critical need to secure victories in La Liga after falling behind Barcelona in the championship race and now sitting four points adrift with 10 matches remaining, Real Madrid must also confront Bayern Munich in a two-legged Champions League quarterfinal.

Should Madrid advance, the opening leg of a potential semifinal against Paris Saint-Germain or Liverpool also occurs during Courtois' anticipated absence.

The Belgian may not return until Álvaro Arbeloa's squad meets Espanyol on May 2. The second league Clásico of the campaign against Barcelona at Camp Nou follows shortly after. Given its proximity to the season's conclusion, that encounter could determine Spain's champion.

Andriy Lunin Hoping to Channel 2024 Form

Andriy Lunin mobbed by his joyous teammates.

Following his return from various loan spells, Lunin has served as Real Madrid's primary substitute whenever Courtois has been sidelined since 2021.

He competed with loan acquisition Kepa Arrizabalaga for that position during the initial months of 2023–24 following Courtois' ACL rupture, but ultimately secured his status as the interim first choice. Lunin appeared 31 times that campaign, delivering standout displays against RB Leipzig and Manchester City during their Champions League triumph.

Lunin relinquished his position to Courtois once the established number one regained fitness, though he retained starting duties home and away in the Champions League semifinals versus Bayern Munich as recognition for his pivotal display in Manchester during the prior round.

Significant discussion surrounded who should start the final, though ultimately the decision became straightforward when Lunin contracted flu. He remained on the substitutes' bench but traveled to London separately from the team to minimize contagion risk.

At that juncture, he confronted a decision: Remain at Real Madrid as backup and feature only during Courtois' unavailability, or seek a transfer for regular playing time elsewhere. Lunin selected the former option, subsequently agreeing to a new six-year deal in the Spanish capital extending through 2030.
