Real Madrid's Clasico Triumph: Who Shined and Who Crumbled at the Bernabéu

The La Liga title race is back on. Just when everyone was ready to declare the season over before it truly began, Real Madrid pulled off a victory at Camp Nou to inject fresh excitement into the standings.

El Clásico rarely disappoints, and Barcelona's nine-game winning streak came to a sudden and shocking halt on Sunday, as Kylian Mbappé's brace trimmed the gap at the summit to a mere three points.

While it's only one result, it fundamentally shifts the narrative in La Liga — Barça can no longer be viewed as an unstoppable force charging toward a third consecutive title. Madrid, meanwhile, have transformed overnight from looking disjointed and erratic to composed and ruthless.

Amid the many storylines emerging from Spanish football's most prestigious fixture, here's a breakdown of the winners and losers from the match.

Winners

José Mourinho

José Mourinho

Mbappé's goals grabbed the attention, but the evening truly belonged to Mourinho. The 63-year-old looks different from the last time he managed a Clásico — older, greyer, and now sporting a beard — yet he appeared to pick up exactly where he left off back in 2013.

Mourinho is now unbeaten across his last six Clásico appearances and has a unique ability to get under Barcelona's skin like no other manager in the game.

While many anticipated controversy and mind games from the manager ahead of kickoff, it was ultimately his tactical setup that took center stage.

Mourinho deployed Federico Valverde at right back and Bernardo Silva in central midfield, organizing a side capable of stifling space and striking swiftly on the counter.

The manager disclosed post-match that Camavinga's run for Madrid's winning goal was a deliberate instruction, as he had identified that Barça struggled to track runners arriving from deep positions.

Kylian Mbappé

Kylian Mbappé

Now at 100 goals for Real Madrid — only Cristiano Ronaldo and Ferenc Puskás reached that milestone for Los Blancos in fewer appearances than Mbappé's 116 games.

It's a genuinely extraordinary record for the Frenchman. With Lamine Yamal squandering his best opportunity, Mbappé rose to the occasion when it mattered most.

The French forward has now scored 14 goals in 11 outings against Barcelona — making them his second-most prolific opponents by career goals, trailing only Montpellier (15).

Marc Cucurella

Marc Cucurella

It's been a mixed beginning for Marc Cucurella, who was reportedly personally selected by Mourinho to address Madrid's fullback concerns during the summer transfer window.

The dynamic, two-way defender had rarely been able to showcase the World Cup-winning form he's capable of in his early Madrid appearances, and has been sharing duties with Álvaro Carreras in the opening months of the campaign.

Sunday night, returning to the club where he developed as a youth player, marked Cucurella's true arrival as a galáctico, as he effectively neutralized Lamine Yamal on the flank.

The summer recruit completed 95% of his passes and made 12 defensive contributions, while adopting a physical approach against Barça's elite attackers and pushing every limit available to him.

Mourinho lauded Cucurella after the final whistle, stating: "It was a great team effort, but it's probably the toughest match Cucu has had, and he came out on top against a very good player [in Lamine Yamal]."

Losers

Lamine Yamal

Lamine Yamal

If the match was framed as a Mbappé vs. Yamal showdown beforehand, it was Barça's No. 10 who came out second best in the battle of the superstars.

As was the case the previous week against Paris Saint-Germain, the teenager fell short of his electrifying best and found himself outmatched by his international teammate Cucurella.

While he eventually conjured a moment of brilliance against PSG, no such spark materialized at Camp Nou, with Yamal firing his clearest chance wide just before the break.

He ended the game with the most touches in the opposition box (11) and dribbles (4), yet failed to provide the crucial final contribution and didn't register a single shot on target.

Gerard Martín

Gerard Martín.

It was a night to forget for defender Martín, who was directly responsible for handing Madrid their opener when his inexplicably poor clearance ricocheted off an unsuspecting Mbappé and beyond Joan García.

Neither of Barça's center backs performed at their best, but Martín's showing in particular has reignited familiar questions about whether La Blaugrana possess sufficient defensive quality to compete at the very highest level.

The converted left back failed to win a single ground duel throughout the match, while Spanish outlet Cadena Ser wrote post-match that Martín "deserved to be sent to the fourth tier" for his costly blunder.

He did, however, come close to making amends with a second-half header that drew a world-class stop from Andriy Lunin.

Vinícius Júnior

Vinícius Jr

Some players become more valuable in their absence. Vinícius Jr is not currently one of them.

Following the 5–1 demolition of Sevilla the previous week, the rest of the Madrid squad continued to thrive without the suspended Brazilian in Catalonia, with Yan Diomande and Arda Güler increasingly looking like undisputed first-team regulars.

In Diomande, who started the match in Vinícius Jr's left-wing role, Madrid possess a dribbling threat and an excellent outlet who doesn't appear to clash with Mbappé's movement.

The 19-year-old Ivorian was relentless throughout the night and, while he didn't add to his six goal contributions across five matches, he is the pacey, confident winger Madrid have long been searching for.

Federico Valverde

Federico Valverde

Almost exactly a year ago, Valverde was voicing his frustration about being used at right back away at Kairat Almaty under Xabi Alonso. Now, he has inadvertently become Mourinho's go-to option in that position.

The experienced coach appears to have limited confidence in Denzel Dumfries and even less in Trent Alexander-Arnold, making the Uruguayan his de facto solution in the role.

Speaking after the match, Mourinho also appeared to suggest that the Aurélien Tchouaméni-Valverde midfield pairing may be a thing of the past, following impressive performances from Bernardo Silva — and later Eduardo Camavinga — in a more creative central role.

To compound matters further, Mourinho also confirmed that Valverde sustained a knock during the victory and played on through the discomfort before being substituted after an hour.
