Real Madrid's Defensive Shake-Up: Which Star Center Back Will Los Blancos Pursue Next?

Real Madrid were targeting German defender Nico Schlotterbeck for a summer move to the Spanish capital, however the centre-back is reportedly close to signing a new deal with Borussia Dortmund.

With both Antonio Rüdiger and David Alaba's contracts expiring at season's end, Los Blancos are seeking defensive reinforcements to complement Éder Militão, Dean Huijsen and Raúl Asencio. Schlotterbeck had become a primary candidate for the position, but he may be unavailable before the transfer market opens.

Per BILD, the 26-year-old is scheduled to hold talks with BVB next week regarding securing his future at Signal Iduna Park. Dortmund aims to retain Schlotterbeck, with his prospects of remaining with the German club reportedly "getting better."

If an agreement is reached, Real Madrid will lose their primary target, a scenario the 15-time European champions know all too well.

Marc Guéhi

The pool of available centre-back targets with the caliber and experience Los Blancos desire continues to shrink daily. The Spanish powerhouse began 2025–26 with four candidates in consideration, each capable of strengthening a frequently struggling defensive line.

Liverpool centre-back Ibrahima Konaté was initially the frontrunner, but his poor season start allegedly convinced Real Madrid to abandon their pursuit. At that moment, stepping back from the Frenchman didn't trigger concern at the Bernabéu; there were seemingly superior alternatives available.

However, an active winter transfer period among Europe's elite clubs gradually eliminated those alternatives. Manchester City acquired Marc Guéhi, Liverpool secured Jérémy Jacquet, and Bayern Munich tied down Dayot Upamecano until 2030.

Suddenly, the Spanish giants had to shift focus to Schlotterbeck, who would still represent a valuable addition given his tactical awareness, physical presence and ball-playing ability. However, if he commits to a new Dortmund contract, Real Madrid are essentially starting over.

Ibrahima Konaté

The obvious remaining option for Los Blancos remains Konaté. The France international hasn't signed fresh terms with the Reds and is poised to become a free agent when the season concludes, aligning perfectly with Real Madrid's preferred transfer approach.

The 26-year-old possesses the imposing stature that Álvaro Arbeloa's defense lacks, and would provide much-needed physicality to a backline too easily overpowered. Among marquee names, Konaté represents the most prominent available option and reports suggest he has returned to the top of their wishlist.

If the club remains uninterested following his seasonal difficulties, they might focus on RB Leipzig prospect Castello Lukeba. The 23-year-old is exceptionally reliable defensively and ranks among the Bundesliga's finest young prospects. His potential alone justifies making a move, though his rumored $104.6 million (€90 million) release clause serves as a significant obstacle for the Spanish club.

Ousmane Diomande

A more budget-friendly alternative is Sporting CP star Ousmane Diomande. The centre-back possesses exceptional speed and an assertive playing approach, with his valuation believed to be just $29 million (€25 million). The Ivory Coast international attracts interest from multiple European heavyweights, however, and Real Madrid typically avoid auction scenarios.

If other options fall through, the 15-time European champions could activate their buyback provision for Jacobo Ramón, who is excelling in his debut Como campaign. The former Real Madrid Castilla player represents academy talent and offers the simplest solution, although his on-field ability doesn't match the previously mentioned players' standards.

His current manager Cesc Fàbregas also confirmed to reporters that Ramón would remain at Como next season, but he may lack influence if Real Madrid make an approach.
