Real Madrid's Season From Hell: The Most Devastating Moments Ranked

Real Madrid's Season From Hell: The Most Devastating Moments Ranked

When the final whistle sounded on Saturday afternoon, Real Madrid let out a collective sigh of relief that this season was finally behind them.

What a turbulent campaign it proved to be for Madridistas, who watched in horror as the club lurched from one disappointment to the next amid a string of controversies.

It has, of course, been yet another silverware-free season at the Bernabéu but, in truth, that fact barely scratches the surface of the club's deeper problems.

Discord is spreading rapidly at Valdebebas and the leadership of the club under Florentino Pérez has faced fierce criticism and scrutiny.

Here are the 10 darkest moments from Real Madrid's nightmare season—ranked.

Real Madrid's Lowest Points in 2025–26

10. Home Defeat to Celta Vigo

Xabi Alonso

Arguably the point of no return for Xabi Alonso.

Three Los Blancos players were sent off during a ill-tempered 2–0 home loss at the Bernabéu back in December.

Some reports suggest that Florentino Pérez wanted to dismiss Alonso on the spot, but was talked out of it by club CEO José Ángel Sánchez. A home loss to Manchester City in the Champions League followed shortly after.

Alonso was given just six more matches at the helm as team morale continued to crumble.

9. Vinicius Jr Tantrum

Vinicius Junior, Xabi Alonso

The first real indication that something was seriously amiss this season: Vinicius Jr threw his arms up in frustration, yelling, "Always me" and "I'm leaving the team, it's better if I leave, I'm leaving," before storming off down the tunnel after being substituted during October's Clásico victory.

Alonso told the press there would be no fine for the winger, but tensions had clearly boiled over with a significant portion of the dressing room at odds with Alonso's methods.

The incident served as a warning sign of what lay ahead.

8. Home Defeat to Getafe

Franco Mastantuono

Madrid's second home league loss of the campaign arrived in March, with Arbeloa struggling to claw back ground on Barcelona at the summit of the table.

Martín Satriano's first-half goal proved to be the decisive blow, as an Mbappé-less Madrid squandered their opportunities.

Chants of "Florentino, resign" rang out from the Bernabéu terraces, while Arbeloa publicly criticized youngster Franco Mastantuono for picking up a late red card after a confrontation with the referee.

7. Pérez's Rant

Florentino Pérez

When Florentino Pérez convened an "emergency" press conference on the afternoon of May 12, many expected the club president to announce a new managerial appointment or deliver a firm statement addressing the recent internal conflicts at the training ground.

Instead, what unfolded was a bizarre hour in which the 79-year-old lashed out at those he considered adversaries, complained about "stolen titles" and called a snap presidential election.

In an already chaotic season, the club's most powerful figure did nothing to restore a sense of order.

6. Mbappé Melodrama

Kylian Mbappé

A difficult season reached a flashpoint for Mbappé this spring when the forward drew heavy criticism for a poorly timed holiday with his girlfriend.

Reports of a confrontation with a member of Arbeloa's coaching staff at the training ground only added fuel to the fire, while the timing of the forward's 'supportive' post during the Clásico sent social media into a frenzy.

Mbappé, who was jeered during a second-half substitute appearance in the 2–0 win over Real Oviedo, escalated matters further with a fiery mixed-zone outburst, in which he claimed he was "fourth-choice striker" under Arbeloa.

5. Crushing Madrid Derby

Julián Alvarez

There are derby defeats and there are derby defeats.

After a promising start to the league campaign, with six straight wins, Madrid were brought crashing back to earth away at Atlético Madrid, suffering a 5–2 thrashing at the hands of their city rivals back in September.

The painful defeat marked the first occasion since 1950 that Atléti had netted five times in a Madrid derby.

4. Copa del Rey Exit

Real Madrid

Brought in to stabilize the club following a turbulent few months, Arbeloa endured a disastrous managerial debut as Madrid were knocked out of the Copa del Rey by second-division side Albacete in the round of 16.

Two late goals from Jefté Bentancor—a player who had previously come through Madrid's youth academy—condemned Los Blancos to an embarrassing 3–2 exit.

3. Champions League Exit

Eduardo Camavinga

Eduardo Camavinga found himself at the center of attention in the Champions League quarterfinal second-leg defeat to Bayern Munich, with his contentious red card in Bavaria proving to be the pivotal moment in a thrilling contest that the hosts ultimately won 4–3.

However, the refereeing debate and occasional glimpses of attacking quality couldn't disguise a dreadful 10-day stretch for Madrid.

The defeat capped a run of four games without a victory across all competitions, effectively extinguishing any remaining hope of silverware in 2025–26.

2. Clásico Hands Barça the Title

Eduardo Camavinga and Dani Olmo

While Barcelona's title triumph had long seemed a foregone conclusion, the Catalans officially sealing their championship at home against Real Madrid was a particularly bitter pill to swallow.

It was the first time in history that a Clásico had served as the title-deciding fixture in La Liga, while Madrid—distracted by off-field turmoil—put up virtually no fight.

Marcus Rashford's early free kick set the tone for the hosts, with Ferran Torres doubling the advantage inside the opening 20 minutes.

1. The Real Rumble

Federico Valverde (left) and Aurélien Tchouaméni.

The moment that may ultimately define this season: Real Madrid confirmed that Federico Valverde had been taken to hospital with a "brain injury" following a physical altercation with teammate Aurélien Tchouaméni at the training ground, as dressing-room tensions turned violent.

Both players received fines of €500,000 ($580,000), but escaped further disciplinary action.

That very same week, Álvaro Carreras appeared to corroborate reports that he had been struck by Antonio Rüdiger in a separate incident.

Squad unity has hit an all-time low. José Mourinho is now on the brink of taking charge with the specific mandate of managing the egos and restoring order to a Real Madrid side that has been consumed by dysfunction throughout the campaign.
