Red Devils Crumble at Old Trafford: Man Utd Slump to Shocking Home Loss Against Leeds Under Carrick

A dismal opening half saw Manchester United suffer a 2–1 defeat to Leeds United on Monday evening, falling to their rivals at Old Trafford in the Premier League for the first time in 45 years.

Man United produced their worst 45 minutes of the Carrick era in the first half and were fortunate to reach the interval down by just two goals, both scored by Noah Okafor.

Matters appeared to worsen after the break when Lisandro Martínez was dismissed for tugging Dominic Calvert-Lewin's hair. However, the Red Devils responded with character and Casemiro pulled one back for the home side.

Carrick's squad, remarkably, performed far better with 10 men and carved out chance after chance in the closing stages. But United's response came too late and their spirited comeback ultimately fell short.

It marks the first home loss of the Carrick era and United's first Premier League defeat at Old Trafford since November. A sharper, more complete display will be required next time out when the Red Devils travel to Chelsea in a fixture that could carry significant weight in the battle for Champions League qualification.

The One Thing We Can't Ignore

Manchester United players.

In their first match following a 24-day break, Carrick's side looked sluggish, out of sync and visibly rusty. In short, the extended layoff left the Red Devils appearing as though they were still in preseason.

No side had accumulated more points than United in the Premier League since Carrick's appointment in mid-January, yet the form that fuelled their positive run was nowhere in evidence on Monday. Within five minutes, the Red Devils were already behind, and Senne Lammens was forced into a heroic stop to prevent a second.

The hosts looked disorganised at both ends throughout the entire first half, and Leeds could easily have gone into the break with a three or four goal advantage. United were repeatedly caught out of shape defensively, struggled to cope with Leeds' high press which led to a goal from a turnover, the midfield was completely overrun, and attackers were anything but clinical when presented with opportunities.

A chaotic United side showed up in the first half, and with several key players absent, it was a perfect storm that contributed to the defeat, even if the Red Devils improved considerably after the interval.

The strong results gathered before the March international break gave Man Utd a comfortable cushion in the race for Champions League qualification, but it quickly became clear that the lengthy gap between matches had taken a toll on the team.

Carrick's men must rediscover their best form swiftly, as a heavy home defeat against a side deep in a relegation battle is a troubling way to begin the season's final stretch.

Man Utd Player Ratings vs. Leeds (4-2-3-1)

Casemiro

*Ratings Provided by FotMob*

GK: Senne Lammens—5.7: Produced a superb close-range stop early on, but was powerless to prevent the opening goal inside the first five minutes.

RB: Noussair Mazraoui—6.3: Will have sleepless nights thinking about Okafor, who ran riot in the attacking third.

CB: Leny Yoro—7.6: May feel aggrieved about a potential foul in the build-up to Leeds' opener, but the young centre-back still endured a difficult evening.

CB: Lisandro Martínez—5.6: Kept out a third with a goal-line clearance but must bear some responsibility for the build-up to Leeds' second. His night came to an abrupt end with a strange red card after VAR ruled he had committed violent conduct by pulling Dominic Calvert-Lewin's ponytail.

LB: Luke Shaw—6.9: United's standout defender on the night by some distance. Recovered well after a shaky opening that earned him a booking and was dependable for the remainder.

CM: Casemiro—8.0: The Brazilian was troubled by Leeds' press but also produced some incisive through-balls. Once again netted a crucial goal to breathe life into United's challenge.

CM: Manuel Ugarte—6.6: Making his first start of the Carrick era, Ugarte looked uncomfortable in midfield, delivering a display that typifies his time at United.

RW: Amad Diallo—6.4: United's most threatening attacker in the early stages, regularly testing Leeds' defence. However, after a few poor choices, his confidence appeared to wane and he faded from the game.

AM: Bruno Fernandes—8.0: The creative United skipper showed glimpses of his class with some outstanding deliveries, one of which was converted by Casemiro to hand Fernandes his league-leading 17th assist of the season.

LW: Matheus Cunha—7.0: Was booked for a blatant dive that referee Paul Tierney was quick to punish. Frustratingly for United, Cunha offered little in the final third despite showing improvement in the second half.

ST: Benjamin Šeško—6.6: Squandered a clear-cut chance in the first half but came close to a stunning individual goal after the break. Had further opportunities but was denied on each occasion.

SUB: Diogo Dalot (70' for Mazraoui)—6.7: Completed every pass and was composed throughout his 20-minute appearance.

SUB: Bryan Mbeumo (70' for Diallo)—6.0: Had a golden chance to level the scores but hesitated slightly and his effort was eventually blocked.

Subs not used: Altay Bayındır (GK), Ayden Heaven, Tyler Fletcher, Mason Mount, Joshua Zirkzee, Tyrell Malacia, Shea Lacey.
