Reece James Blasts 'Boring' Media Narrative—But The Chatter Refuses To Die

England right back Reece James has described the ongoing conversation about his injury struggles as "boring," saying he's doing his best to tune out the chatter and concentrate on his football.

Chelsea's skipper is considered one of the finest fullbacks on the planet when fully fit, capable of making an impact at both ends of the field. However, his career has been repeatedly disrupted by persistent injury setbacks, restricting the 26-year-old to just 25 senior international appearances so far.

James is set to play a significant part for England as the 2026 World Cup unfolds, and he completed his first full 90 minutes as the Three Lions delivered an impressive performance to beat Croatia 4–2 in their opening group stage fixture.

It was a welcome milestone for James, who was absent from the 2022 World Cup due to injury and also missed the Euro 2024 final, yet questions about managing his minutes are never far behind. It's a source of irritation for England's No. 24, who finds it puzzling that his availability is constantly being raised as a concern.

"People always bring up injuries and availability, and honestly it's so boring to me now," James told BBC Radio 5 Live. "My one job is to be the best version of myself when I'm out on the pitch. I get why the narrative existed early on, but after a while it just gets old.

"I was fit for a long stretch before my last injury, and I don't pay too much attention to the noise. I just focus on myself, my body, and doing everything I can to perform well and help the team."

Tuchel Ticks the Boxes for Success

Thomas Tuchel passes on instructions to Jude Bellingham during England's match against Croatia.

Thomas Tuchel regularly finds himself in the spotlight for various reasons — whether it's admiration for his tactical approach and candid press conferences, or scrutiny over certain selection decisions. But in James's view, the German coach excels not only in tactical matters on the pitch, but also in building genuine connections with his players.

James has a deeper familiarity with Tuchel, having worked alongside him at Chelsea, and he credits the manager's "passion and willingness to want to win" as something that resonates throughout the England camp, where everyone is "fighting for the same goal."

"We've worked together before at Chelsea. We won trophies together, and I love playing under him," James told talkSPORT. "As a person and as a manager, he just connects really well. I appreciate both his managerial qualities and his personal side too.

"If you look at the top managers across the board, some are purely football-focused, and others are excellent man-managers but perhaps not as strong tactically.

"For me, he ticks both boxes. I've been in dressing rooms where he's delivered some powerful speeches — at halftime, before games, after games. We all want the same thing, we're all chasing the same goal, and that comes from his passion and desire to win."

Will James Remain in England's Team Throughout the World Cup?

Tino Livramento

Even though James feels it's time to stop dwelling on injuries, the fact that Tino Livramento was forced to withdraw from the tournament through injury of his own has placed even greater scrutiny on England's options at right back.

Trevoh Chalobah was called up as Livramento's replacement, and while he can operate at right back — as can John Stones — it isn't a position he's particularly accustomed to. That leaves James and Djed Spence, who has earned just seven caps, as the only natural right backs in the squad, placing added pressure on James to remain available.

One approach both Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior took during their respective stints as Chelsea manager last season was to rotate James in and out of the starting lineup. He featured in 39 matches across all competitions, including 29 in the Premier League — the second highest tally of his career — and benefitted from the opportunity to rest when Malo Gusto stepped in.

England don't have that same flexibility, particularly at a major tournament, so James's fitness is likely to stay a prominent topic as the knockout rounds get underway, especially as fatigue and minor knocks begin to take a greater toll.
