Perhaps the only downside of Chelsea's impressive victory on Saturday was Xabi Alonso's confirmation that club captain Reece James suffered a new injury, explaining his absence from the win over Bournemouth.
Chelsea dismantled the Cherries 5–1 at Stamford Bridge to end a three-game winless run in the Premier League. Xabi Alonso's squad put in its finest display of the season in their first outing following the extended international break.
James was unable to feature for England during the international fixtures as Thomas Tuchel confirmed the Chelsea skipper was left out of his squad due to injury. The 26-year-old also sat out Chelsea's loss to Brentford just before the international break.
On Friday, Alonso indicated his captain had returned to training and was "ready to go" ahead of the Bournemouth fixture, making James's absence from the matchday squad 24 hours later all the more unexpected.
Alonso provided clarification on the matter following the final whistle. Sadly for Chelsea, the update is far from encouraging.
What Injury Does Reece James Have?

Alonso disclosed that a knee problem sustained in training was behind James's unexpected absence from Saturday's win.
"He felt something in training," Alonso said post-match. "But after we did the tests later in the afternoon he had some little issues on the knee, so we need to check how long it will be."
James picked up the fresh setback during Chelsea's last training session ahead of the Bournemouth clash. While no specific diagnosis has been given, muscular concerns are thought to have been the issue he was managing before the international break.
The knee problem Alonso mentioned appears to be an entirely separate issue, which is far from ideal given that it marks two distinct injuries less than two months into the season.
When Will Reece James Return for Chelsea?

Alonso declined to give a firm return date for James, simply noting that "we need to assess him week by week."
In the best-case scenario, Chelsea could welcome their captain back for their next Premier League fixture away at Everton in a week's time. With no European commitments this season, Chelsea benefit from a lighter schedule and additional recovery time between games.
However, James's lengthy injury history may prompt Chelsea to take a very cautious approach to his rehabilitation. The Cobham academy product has lost considerable time to injury throughout his career, and the club would be prudent to ensure he is fully fit before returning, given how vital he is to the team.
As such, it would come as little surprise if James misses the Everton fixture, with a potential comeback targeted for the home London derby against Tottenham Hotspur on Oct. 24.

Chelsea's Options to Replace Reece James

James has featured almost exclusively as a central midfielder in the early stages of the Alonso era. Fortunately for Chelsea, previously sidelined midfielders have not only regained full fitness—they are already making an impact on the pitch.
Jordan Henderson and Moisés Caicedo formed Alonso's double-pivot against Bournemouth and excelled, with both players having only recently returned from injury. In his first Chelsea start at Stamford Bridge, Henderson netted twice and added an assist, while Caicedo looked composed in his first start of the season.
Alonso was pleased with his starting midfielders' performances, and Roméo Lavia also appeared sharp during his substitute appearance after experiencing an injury scare during the international break.
Should Alonso also require cover at right-center back or wingback—roles James can fill—Josh Acheampong and Pedro Neto also caught the eye on Saturday. Additionally, summer signing Marco Palestra made his seasonal debut with a 20-minute cameo at wingback.
