Rising Stars: The Most Explosive MLS Players Under 22 Taking the League by Storm

Rising Stars: The Most Explosive MLS Players Under 22 Taking the League by Storm

Major League Soccer unveiled their yearly 22 Under 22 ranking, highlighting the finest young talents currently playing in the league.

The ranking features the top 22 players who are 22 years old or younger throughout MLS. Only athletes who will remain under 22 when the 2025 regular season concludes were considered for this honor. The selection process involved 64 ballots with input from 23 MLS team coaches, soccer executives and directors, plus head scouts, according to MLS.

A total of 103 players garnered votes, though just 22 secured spots on the final roster. This serves as additional compelling proof that as the league expands in recognition and status, talented players have been the catalyst.

Below is the complete MLS 22 Under 22 ranking.

2025 MLS 22 Under 22: Position Analysis

Obed Vargas has established himself as one of MLS's premier midfielders, boasting more than 100 matches for Seattle Sounders. He recently assisted Seattle in capturing the 2025 Leagues Cup and made history as the first Mexico national team player in MLS to lead the 22 Under 22 rankings.

Alex Freeman earned the second position on the list. An outstanding campaign with Orlando City led to Mauricio Pochettino selecting him for his inaugural USMNT call-up for the 2025 Gold Cup. His next goal is securing a spot on the 2026 World Cup squad.

The top three is rounded out by Charlotte FC's Idan Toklomati, who has been exceptional for the Crowns since assuming starting responsibilities following Patrick Agyemang's transfer to Derby County.

Austin FC midfielder Owen Wolff and LAFC forward David Martínez complete the top five positions.

Philadelphia Union leads all teams with three representatives on the list. Quinn Sullivan, Olwethu Makhanya and Frankie Westfield all contributed to Philadelphia securing their second Supporters' Shield championship.

The distinction of being the youngest player on the list goes to Peyton Miller. At just 17 years old, Miller has secured the starting left-back position for New England Revolution. This marks his second appearance on the list, after claiming the final spot in 2024.
