Robert Lewandowski Officially Joins MLS, Adding Another Soccer Icon to the League's Star-Studded Roster

Chicago Fire of Major League Soccer officially announced on Monday that the signing of former FC Barcelona superstar Robert Lewandowski has been finalized. The Polish striker will join the team on a two-year deal running through the 2027–28 season, filling Designated Player and international roster spots for the club.

Lewandowski departed Barcelona as a free agent this past spring following four seasons in which he netted 120 goals across all competitions. Before that, he enjoyed highly productive spells at Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, spending eight seasons with the latter. Over the course of his entire career, the 37-year-old has registered 629 goals and 159 assists across 869 appearances in all competitions.

"It feels amazing," head coach Gregg Berhalter said on the Up & Adams Show. "We want to build a world-class organization, and you need world-class players to do that."

Berhalter further stated in the club's official announcement: "His arrival reinforces our ambition to compete for trophies and raises the standards for the Club to heights worthy of this city. We cannot wait to get to work with him and have Chicago see first-hand why he is among the most revered sporting icons in the world."

The Fire plan to introduce the striker on July 16 against the Vancouver Whitecaps at Soldier Field, the team's first fixture back following the summer international break. Lewandowski's quality will be tested right away, as the Whitecaps—featuring Berhalter's own son, Sebastian—sit atop the Western Conference with just a single defeat all season.

The Fire Finally Secure Their Superstar

Inter Miami have Lionel Messi and Rodrigo De Paul. The Whitecaps have Thomas Müller, Lewandowski's former Bayern Munich teammate.

LAFC have Son Heung Min, and now Orlando City have Antoine Griezmann, who was spotted training at the team's facilities just this week.

The Fire have been pursuing marquee names for some time, eager to join the trend of signing global soccer legends. After several unsuccessful attempts—including missing out on Brazilian icon Neymar and Müller last year—the club has finally landed their man.

Berhalter has been testing a two-striker formation and believes Lewandowski will fit into it naturally, lining up alongside current standout forward Hugo Cuypers to cause serious problems for opposing defenses.

"That's something we are looking forward to seeing," Berhalter said. "If you're an opposing defense and you have to go against Robert Lewandowski and Hugo Cuypers, you're probably going to be in for a long day."

Above all else, however, Berhalter is most enthused by Lewandowski's proven winning pedigree. The striker has lifted 32 trophies throughout his career, including 10 Bundesliga titles, three La Liga championships, one FIFA Club World Cup, and one UEFA Champions League crown.

"Everywhere he's gone, he's scored goals, but more importantly, everywhere he's gone, he's won."
