Rodri Gives Real Madrid the Green Light—But This Mega Transfer Could Backfire Spectacularly

Manchester City midfielder Rodri has boldly stated that the "door is not closed" to a move to Real Madrid, intensifying speculation over a potential blockbuster transfer this summer.

The 2024 Ballon d'Or holder has made no secret of his interest in a possible switch to the Bernabéu, despite his contract with City extending through the end of next season. Rodri, a Madrid native, previously offered a cryptic "we'll see" when asked about mounting links to the 15-time European champions, but this time he was far more direct.

"Would I like to play in Spain again? In La Liga, in Madrid? I would like to go back, yes," he told Spanish radio station Onda Cero.

"You can't say no to one of the greatest clubs in the world. It doesn't matter whether they're going through a good or bad spell, Real Madrid will always be Real Madrid. The door is not closed."

Rodri Is a Dream Transfer—But Also a Gamble

Rodri

Two years ago, Madridistas would have been clamoring for Real Madrid to bring in Rodri. The Spaniard is undeniably the finest player in the world at his position and would naturally fill the gap left by Toni Kroos in central midfield.

However, mounting fitness concerns and a modest dip in form make this dream signing considerably riskier heading into 2026. The last thing Los Blancos need is yet another player prone to the treatment table; injury problems have become a near-constant reality at the Bernabéu, and spending a significant fee on a player who could spend extended spells sidelined is questionable, even given Rodri's undeniable quality.

Set to turn 30 this summer, the midfielder also doesn't quite fit the club's current philosophy, which has centered on assembling a roster of young talent. More Real Madrid Castilla graduates are being promoted than ever before, and the first team's average age sits at just 25.

That said, Los Blancos are in genuine need of a deep-lying playmaker, and Rodri ticks that box. If he can stay fit for the remainder of the season and deliver his best football for Spain at the 2026 World Cup, there may be little to stop Real Madrid from making their move.

Club president Florentino Pérez will simply have to hope the gamble pays off and that Real Madrid don't find themselves reliving the disappointment of Eden Hazard's ill-fated transfer.

Rodri's Past Could Clash With Real Madrid

Age and fitness concerns aren't the only obstacles standing in the way of Rodri's potential move to the Bernabéu. The Spain international previously represented fierce rivals Atlético Madrid before making the switch to City ahead of the 2019–20 campaign.

Rodri, however, appears unbothered by his history with Diego Simeone's club. "Having played for Atlético before would not stop me from playing for Real Madrid. Other players have done it before, maybe not through direct transfers, but eventually."

Indeed, several players have represented both Madrid clubs without significant backlash — Los Blancos' first-choice goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois being a prime example. Atlético Madrid fullback Marcos Llorente also began his career in the white shirt, as did Álvaro Morata before eventually making his way to the Metropolitano.

There is also the matter of Rodri and Vinicius Junior's rivalry for the 2024 Ballon d'Or, which could potentially create tension in the dressing room — though the City star was quick to dismiss any suggestion of a feud between the pair.

"I have nothing against Vini," Rodri said. "I have the utmost respect for him and for everything he achieved that Ballon d'Or year. It's others who decide who wins the award. People tried to pit us against each other, but that simply isn't the case."
