Rodri Throws Down the Gauntlet: Can Barcelona Rise to His Bold Champions League Challenge?

Barcelona may not have officially announced Rodri's signing just yet, but the 2024 Ballon d'Or recipient has already spoken to the press, describing it as a "dream" to represent the reigning Spanish champions.

The Catalan club had been pursuing Rodri's signature following the 2026 World Cup, in which the midfielder led Spain to glory as captain while also claiming the Golden Ball award. Real Madrid had also entered the race for the Manchester City star, but ultimately fell short against their fierce rivals.

Rodri reached personal terms with Barcelona relatively swiftly, but then endured a tense wait as the Spanish powerhouse engaged in prolonged negotiations with City. It required three separate offers and a guaranteed fee of $68.8 million (€60 million) to reportedly seal the deal, just hours after City suffered a humbling 3–0 loss to Arsenal in the Community Shield.

The following day, Rodri had already landed in Barcelona and delivered his opening remarks as a member of Hansi Flick's side.

"I'm thrilled to be here and to play alongside my new teammates," Rodri told the press, via AS, after expressing what a "dream" it is to become a Barcelona player.

When questioned about his ambitions for 2026–27, the Spaniard responded, "The Champions League and competing for every title available to us. It's time to get down to business. It's been a hectic few days, but everything worked out in the end."

Can Rodri Help Barcelona Achieve Champions League Goal?

Rodri

For the better part of the last decade, winning the Champions League has been Barcelona's overriding ambition. The club last claimed Europe's top club prize in 2014–15 and have since failed to even reach the final, let alone lift the trophy.

Flick's side came agonizingly close in 2024–25, only to be eliminated in the semifinals 7–6 on aggregate by Inter Milan. They sought ultimate redemption the following season, but were knocked out by Atlético Madrid at the quarterfinal stage.

Barcelona are once again targeting European glory in 2026–27, buoyed by the crop of World Cup winners in Flick's lineup, which now includes Rodri. The arrival of the finest deep-lying playmaker on the planet only sharpens the Catalans' hunger to finally bring a Champions League trophy back to Catalonia—for the first time since Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez and Neymar led the attack.

Not only does Rodri instantly upgrade what is already regarded as the best midfield in Spain, but he will also bring much-needed stability to a defense that was too frequently exposed by Flick's notorious high line last season. The 30-year-old is an exceptional counter-pressing midfielder, capable of snuffing out dangerous transitions before they even reach Pau Cubarsí and his defensive partners.

One only needs to look at Spain's remarkable summer campaign; La Roja conceded a single goal on their way to 2026 World Cup glory, all while deploying the highest defensive line in the tournament. Rodri can even drop into a third center-back role when required, throwing himself on the line to bail out the defense in critical moments.

Rodri

The technical quality, footballing intelligence and defensive capability the Spain international brings is priceless for a club with Champions League aspirations. It's also worth remembering Rodri has a habit of scoring crucial goals—most notably the winner that handed City the 2022–23 Champions League title against Inter.

The list of attributes continues, and provided Rodri remains fit, the back-to-back La Liga champions will undoubtedly be a formidable presence on the European stage.

But can they truly dethrone Paris Saint-Germain? Probably not without a striker.

Hansi Flick

Time is running out for Barcelona to land a No. 9 before the transfer window shuts. The departures of Robert Lewandowski, who joined MLS outfit Chicago Fire, and Ferran Torres, who moved to PSG, have left Flick without a natural center forward.

The German manager can lean on new arrivals Anthony Gordon or Karim Adeyemi as a short-term fix, but neither will prove sufficient against the elite European sides standing between Barcelona and Champions League glory. Julián Alvarez could be the game-changer, though Atlético Madrid appear reluctant to sell the Argentine.

All attention will be fixed on the defending Spanish champions as the transfer window enters its final weeks. Should they land Alvarez or another reliable striker, Barcelona will undeniably emerge as one of the leading contenders to unseat PSG as Champions League kings.
