Rodri's Arrival Could Shatter Barcelona's All-Time Transfer Records

Barcelona are reportedly ready to make Rodri the priciest 30-year-old signing in the club's history with a second bid exceeding $69.3 million (£51.3 million, €60 million).

The newly crowned World Cup champion has been edging toward a Manchester City departure for some time. Real Madrid had appeared to be the frontrunner before it suddenly came to light that Barcelona were not only in the running, but were actually Rodri's preferred destination.

City quickly dismissed Barcelona's opening bid of roughly $52 million (£38.5 million), signaling clearly that their asking price stands at no less than $81 million (£60 million). The seasoned midfielder has just one year remaining on his deal and had minor back surgery over the summer. Nevertheless, he was named the tournament's best player at the World Cup after orchestrating Spain's global victory from his commanding position at the base of midfield.

Despite the early knockback, Barcelona were believed to have stayed optimistic that a compromise on the fee could be found. The Times now reports that a second offer surpassing $69.3 million is set to be lodged to test City's determination.

It's a substantial amount for any player in their 30s, but particularly for Barcelona given their currently strained financial situation and historical precedent.

Should Barcelona reach a deal for Rodri, the fee would eclipse the $69 million that a 30-year-old Miralem Pjanić commanded during the murky summer transfer window of 2020. That move, however, comes with a caveat.

Pjanić departed Juventus for Barcelona at the same time Brazilian midfielder Arthur Melo made the reverse journey from Camp Nou to Turin. It was less a straight swap and more a mutually convenient financial arrangement. While Barça spent $69 million, they simultaneously received $83 million from Juve. The accounting practice of amortization, which distributes transfer costs across the duration of a contract, combined with the immediate recognition of full sale profits, allowed both clubs to record healthy surpluses at a time when the COVID-19 pandemic had placed severe strain on finances.

During a probe into Juventus's finances in 2021, allegations emerged that the valuations placed on both Pjanić and Arthur had been artificially inflated to benefit both clubs.

Setting that contentious transfer aside, Rodri's nearest rival for the record would be Robert Lewandowski, who joined from Bayern Munich in 2022 at the age of 33 for $52 million. He would celebrate his 34th birthday just weeks later, marking the occasion with a brace that set the tone for much of his four-year spell in Catalonia.

The prolific Polish striker accumulated 120 goals between 2022–26, averaging one every 118 minutes. For context, the celebrated former Bulgarian forward Hristo Stoichkov wrapped up his storied Camp Nou career with 117 goals.

Rodri's contribution will be more difficult to capture in numbers, but he could prove equally vital for a youthful Barcelona side that can dazzle in attack while remaining vulnerable defensively in the biggest matches.
