Rodrygo's Real Madrid Decision Could Unlock Tottenham's Transfer Dreams

Tottenham Hotspur's pursuit of Manchester City winger Savinho is reportedly dependent on Rodrygo departing Real Madrid to join the Citizens.

Spurs had previously been connected with a potential move for Rodrygo, even becoming frontrunners to secure the Brazilian attacker ahead of Arsenal and Liverpool during the early stages of this summer. However, north London's focus and targets seemed to change in the following weeks. Eberechi Eze became their primary objective until Arsenal made their move, and now it seems Savinho has returned to the summit of Tottenham's transfer priorities.

Brentford's Thomas Frank was reportedly preparing a €70 million (£60.6 million, $81.8 million) offer, but convincing City will require more than financial incentives, as they are hesitant to part with their South American talent.

The sole opportunity to persuade Pep Guardiola to release Savinho would be if it becomes evident that they can acquire Rodrygo as his substitute, according to David Ornstein from The Athletic. For this scenario to unfold, the Brazilian would need to inform Real Madrid of his desire to depart this summer, which has not occurred and seems unlikely at present.

Following limited involvement in Xabi Alonso's revamped Real Madrid setup, Rodrygo featured in Sunday's 3–0 triumph against Real Oviedo. Playing in his preferred left-wing position instead of Vinicius Junior, the 24-year-old began promisingly before his influence waned and he was substituted during the final thirty minutes.

Alonso emphasized post-match that Rodrygo remains integral to the team: "We require everyone and Rodrygo is included in that."

Guardiola has avoided utilizing Savinho during this period of transfer uncertainty. The Brazilian was absent from the City lineup that suffered a comprehensive 2–0 defeat on Saturday against, ironically, Spurs.

When reports of Tottenham's pursuit of Savinho emerged earlier this month, Guardiola was resolute that his adaptable forward would remain at the club. "My only focus today is ensuring Savinho stays with us throughout the season, and ideally for many years to come," he declared to reporters.

"At 21 years old with his abilities, getting substantial playing time, he needs to enhance his final third decision-making, but he's a remarkable talent.

"Ultimately, however, the player's wishes take precedence over all else, and subsequently there must be mutual agreement between clubs. Without such agreement, the player remains here."
