Ronald Araújo has revealed that he reached out to fellow Uruguayan internationals Luis Suárez and Darwin Núñez following the confirmation of his loan switch to Liverpool.
The Barcelona centre-back is set to spend the 2026–27 season at Anfield after a swift deal was struck last week, with reports suggesting the agreement includes an option to make the transfer permanent for approximately $63.5 million (£47 million).
Speaking to club media, Araújo was invited to share his recollections of Suárez, Liverpool's first Uruguayan signing, who netted 82 goals in 133 outings for the club between 2011 and 2014.
"We loved watching the English Premier League and everyone in Uruguay gets up early in the morning to catch the games," he recalled.
"Obviously, growing up I used to watch Luis putting in those incredible performances for Liverpool. We all know what he accomplished and the legacy he built at this club during his spell here. So it's brilliant. From the very beginning, people have been drawing that comparison ever since I arrived here.
"I have a great relationship with him, we're pretty close. Just moments ago I received a good luck message from him saying, 'all the best, you've joined a wonderful club and I wish you all the very best for your time there.'"
Núñez's Heartfelt Message to Araújo
While Suárez kept his message private, Núñez chose to publicly express his delight at Araújo's arrival at Liverpool.
"I wish you all the best at this magnificent club, my friend," said Núñez, who departed Anfield for Al Hilal the previous summer.
"I'm truly happy that you'll get to experience the warmth and backing of these supporters — they are something special and they'll make sure you feel it. You're a Red now too, and from a distance I'll always be rooting for you."
Araújo was then asked to respond to that message and share his own words for the supporters who will be singing his name at Anfield throughout the season.
"First of all, before I say anything about the fans, a huge thank you to Darwin for that message," Araújo said. "He's a great friend of mine. We've known each other and played together since we were young kids, basically.
"He's always had nothing but great things to say about Liverpool, that's for sure. When you're out with Darwin, people are constantly calling out his name and things like that. He told me how the fans would spot him and shout, 'Nunez, Nunez!'
"My message [for the fans] would be: I'm going to give everything I have. I want to work incredibly hard. Thank you to the fans for all the messages I've already received. I hope to perform at my best and make them proud throughout the season."
