Ruben Amorim Drops Bombshell 'Quit' Revelation as Man Utd Crisis Deepens

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has confessed that the unpredictable demands of managing the club "at times" leave him contemplating resignation, while other moments inspire him to envision staying for "two decades".

There was subdued hope around United throughout the summer, with Amorim finally receiving the preparation time he lacked in the previous campaign to establish his distinctive tactical approach, plus being provided with an entirely fresh attacking trio in pursuit of goals: Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Šeško.

However, the campaign has started gradually, with the Red Devils failing to convert control into victories in an initial loss to Arsenal, and settling for a 1–1 stalemate with Fulham. On Wednesday evening, United were eliminated from the Carabao Cup by Grimsby Town, positioned three divisions lower.

Amorim delivered harsh criticism following the cup match, declaring that "something must change". However, speaking on Friday ahead of the weekend's Premier League encounter with Burnley at Old Trafford, he indicated it was an emotional reaction to the defeat.

Ruben Amorim Admits 'Sometimes I Want to Quit'

"To be completely candid with you all, every occasion we experienced, or will experience going forward, one loss like [Grimsby], I'm going to react that way," the Portuguese manager revealed. "I'm going to express that sometimes I despise, sometimes I adore my players, sometimes I want to support my players. This is my approach to handling things and I'm going to remain like that. Sometimes I want to resign, sometimes I want to stay here for 20 years.

"I experienced in that instance, I was extremely frustrated and irritated. I understand you have many seasoned individuals discussing how I should conduct myself with the media—to be more consistent, to be more composed. I'm not going to behave like that. I am attempting to acknowledge that, I'm going to remain true to myself. That's the reason I possess the intensity that I have. In that moment, I was genuinely upset and truly let down, because I believed we had a solid pre-season, we were performing better, we were maintaining consistency in our style of play.

"We performed poorly [for] 30 minutes against Fulham, and then that type of display [at Grimsby], I was genuinely disappointed with everything. But currently, it's a fresh match and I'm concentrated on that."

After defeating Aston Villa at Old Trafford on the closing day of last season, United are seeking just a second home league victory since February 26, when Ipswich Town were the opponents.

Amorim faces tactical choices ahead of the Burnley fixture, with Šeško still waiting for his complete Premier League debut—the Slovenian began against Grimsby during midweek. André Onana also featured in the cup but it remains uncertain if he will continue playing backup to Altay Bayındır in league competition.
