Ruben Amorim Lays Bare the Ugly Truth Behind Man Utd's Catastrophic Downfall

Ruben Amorim has acknowledged making "a lot of mistakes" throughout his tenure as Manchester United manager, adding that he "learned a lot" from his time at Old Trafford.

Amorim built an impressive reputation during his spell at Sporting CP, leading the Lisbon club to two Primeira Liga championships over four years. He was considered one of Europe's most promising young coaches, and United paid up to £11 million ($14.6 million) to release him from his Sporting contract.

Yet within just 14 months, the club shelled out another £15.9 million ($21.2 million) to terminate the Portuguese coach and his backroom staff. His tenure was far from successful, and Michael Carrick's impressive work as his replacement only further tarnished Amorim's United legacy.

His tactical system simply wasn't suited to competing at the elite level. Managers have rarely thrived with a back three since Antonio Conte claimed the Premier League title with Chelsea a decade ago, with Amorim's United conceding too much control in matches, leaving them vulnerable to the unpredictability of Premier League football.

He was dismissed in January following a breakdown in his relationship with the club's leadership, but has since stepped in to replace Massimiliano Allegri as AC Milan's head coach.

Amorim's stint at United was nothing short of disastrous, as he recorded the worst Premier League win ratio (32%), the worst goals conceded per game ratio (1.53), and the lowest clean sheet ratio (15%) of any manager in the club's storied history.

Nevertheless, a prestigious club like AC Milan are placing their faith in him to restore the Rossoneri to the top of Serie A. The 2021–22 Scudetto winners have endured back-to-back finishes of eighth and fifth, parting ways with Allegri in May.

Amorim was officially appointed on June 15 and has since spoken candidly with the media about his experience with the Red Devils.

"The first thing is that it doesn't matter anymore," Amorim told reporters at a press conference during Milan's preseason tour in Australia. "That is the feeling. There's a history, then something happens, the context shifts, and you focus on the next challenge."

Poor performances and a lack of clear identity were central to United's decision to part ways with Amorim earlier this year, as was his deteriorating relationship with key figures in the club's hierarchy, including director of football Jason Wilcox.

He publicly lashed out at his employers during a notable outburst following a 1–1 draw at Leeds United, which turned out to be his last match in the dugout.

"I learned a lot," Amorim continued. "It would be difficult to single out one thing, but what I clearly know is that I made a lot of mistakes. When you reflect like that and realize it wasn't just their fault, but also mine, I think you can become a better coach and a better person."
