Ryan Reynolds' Celebrity Co-Owned Club Struggles to Match Wrexham's Fairy Tale Success

Star-backed football club La Equidad have concluded at the very bottom of Colombia's top flight despite financial support from Wrexham owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

The Hollywood pair have gained recognition in football for their stewardship of Wrexham, guiding three consecutive promotions that elevated the Welsh team to the Championship. Their journey has attracted significant media coverage, particularly through the popular series Welcome to Wrexham.

Reynolds and McElhenney are part of the US-led ownership group that acquired La Equidad in January 2025, joined by actress Eva Longoria, supermodel Kate Upton and baseball star Justin Verlander among other investors.

Yet while they have orchestrated remarkable achievements at the Racecourse Ground, Reynolds and McElhenney have experienced a more challenging debut with the Colombian outfit.

La Equidad Conclude at Bottom of Colombia's Top Flight

La Equidad suffered through a disastrous 2025 campaign, securing victory in merely five of their 40 league fixtures throughout the year. The team placed last in the 20-club standings during both phases of the Categoría Primera A season, ultimately finishing bottom of the combined yearly table.

Although they lost more than half their games, La Equidad have avoided relegation to the lower division. The two clubs that were demoted, Envigado and Unión Magdalena, occupied the final two positions in the three-year aggregate standings and consequently dropped to the second tier.

La Equidad, who will adopt a new identity, badge and kit colors in 2026, have an opportunity to restructure next season after their disappointing campaign, with substantial investment expected given their affluent ownership group's resources.

The team's farewell match as La Equidad concluded positively at least, with the Bogotá club securing a commanding 4–0 victory against Deportivo Pereira.
