Salah Shatters Champions League Records in Historic Continental Milestone
Mohamed Salah made history on Wednesday evening by becoming the first African footballer to reach 50 UEFA Champions League goals, playing a crucial role in Liverpool's advancement to the quarterfinals.
Following Liverpool's comeback from Galatasaray's narrow aggregate advantage, Salah missed his milestone goal opportunity from the penalty spot during the first half. However, the Egyptian superstar proceeded to assist Hugo Ekitiké for the match-winning goal, before ultimately netting Liverpool's fourth strike of the evening at Anfield.
Salah had previously surpassed African greats such as Samuel Eto'o and Didier Drogba in Champions League scoring, and has now achieved his 50-goal milestone in the tournament. In the overall rankings, he sits joint 10th among all-time leading scorers, level with Harry Kane and Thierry Henry.
The majority of these 50 goals have come since Salah's Liverpool arrival in 2017, though two were scored for Swiss side Basel—his initial European club—and one for Roma. During an unsuccessful period at Chelsea, he made just two Champions League appearances without finding the net.
Salah's best Champions League campaign was 2017–18 when he found the net 10 times. Liverpool advanced to the final but fell to Real Madrid in Kyiv, with Salah substituted early due to a shoulder problem following a contentious incident with Sergio Ramos.

Arne Slot Praises Salah's 'Mental Strength'

Following an exceptional 2024–25 campaign, Salah has looked more human in recent months.
His reduced impact during Liverpool's poor spell in October and November resulted in him being benched, but Wednesday night felt like a return to vintage Salah.
Despite an early disappointment in the match, having his penalty saved, he remained undeterred.
Ekitiké expressed appreciation for the assist, describing his experienced teammate as a "legend," while Arne Slot referenced his reliability at elite level across many years.
Salah has missed just one starting position in 14 Liverpool matches since his return from the Africa Cup of Nations in January, after which his departure from the club seemed quite possible. That single absence in the past two months was the weekend's 1–1 stalemate against Tottenham Hotspur, a strategic decision to rest him just three days before Galatasaray's crucial visit.
"It reveals much about his character after missing the penalty just before the break. That can occasionally be challenging for a player or for a team," Slot reflected afterward.
"So, he provided the first assist to Hugo, excellent pass, and then netted a signature goal, I believe, which he has scored numerous times, in this venue for this club, cutting inside, finding the top corner. So, that demonstrates his mental fortitude."
"Regarding fitness, he requested a substitution, not because he felt he had contributed enough, but because he sensed something, so we'll assess his condition for the weekend."

Salah's final Champions League goal tally will depend on how his career concludes. He remains under contract with Liverpool until next season's end, though it's possible that, nearing his 34th birthday and no longer the club's long-term focal point, he might depart after this campaign.
Should he leave Liverpool, Salah could join another Champions League-competing team to continue building his tournament goal record. However, Saudi Arabia represents a realistic destination, while Major League Soccer presents an appealing alternative, particularly since Lionel Messi has revitalized the league as a haven for aging European superstars.
With Liverpool scheduled for at least two more Champions League matches this season—against Paris Saint-Germain—Salah has excellent prospects of overtaking Henry. The next retired players on the all-time list are Ruud van Nistelrooy (56) and Thomas Müller (57), both achievable targets if Salah continues in Europe for another season with Liverpool or elsewhere.
Beyond that, there's a significant leap to Raúl's 71 goals, which appears almost certainly unreachable. Salah will likely conclude his career with fewer Champions League goals than other active players near him: Kane (50), Erling Haaland (57) and Kylian Mbappé (68) in the all-time rankings.
