Salah's Fairytale Farewell Shattered as Liverpool Stumble Against Brentford

Liverpool had to settle for a 1–1 stalemate against Brentford in the final game of their unsuccessful title defense on Sunday, leaving Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson without a winning send-off.

The atmosphere at Anfield was charged with emotion as the two club legends stepped onto the pitch in red for the very last time. But while Salah and Robertson's farewells dominated the occasion, there was still business to attend to for the Reds, who entered the match still needing to secure Champions League qualification.

Arne Slot's side dominated possession without much to show for it in the opening half, but Salah made his presence felt after the break. The Egyptian star teed up Curtis Jones with a stunning trivela assist to hand Liverpool a 1–0 advantage in the 58th minute.

The Reds' lead lasted just six minutes before Kevin Schade slotted an equalizer past Alisson, forcing the hosts to settle for a share of the spoils. Liverpool still clinched their spot in next season's Champions League by finishing fifth, but Sunday's result was another one to add to a long list of disappointments in a difficult campaign.

The Problem That Won't Go Away

Arne Slot

Liverpool looked to be cruising at the hour mark, holding a 1–0 lead courtesy of a Salah-assisted goal on his farewell appearance. Brentford created some decent opportunities throughout, but rarely appeared capable of finding the net.

The Reds were firmly in command until a brief lapse in concentration—as has happened so many times this season—proved costly. Out of nowhere, Brentford kept possession alive inside Liverpool's penalty area and Schade made them pay, leveling the score just six minutes after Slot's men had gone ahead.

Liverpool have now failed to keep a clean sheet in 14 of their last 16 matches across all competitions. In the Premier League alone, the reigning champions have managed just four clean sheets in their last 21 outings.

It's worth noting that Slot has been forced to field a patched-up defensive unit for many of those games, but that justification can only stretch so far. The Reds' inability to shut out opponents cost them trophies this season and could have denied them a Champions League berth had results elsewhere gone differently.

Defensive additions are on the way next season in the shape of Jérémy Jacquet, but the club clearly needs at least one more center-back to strengthen a worryingly exposed backline if they are to mount a genuine title challenge worthy of the badge they wear.

Liverpool Player Ratings vs. Brentford (4-2-3-1)

Andy Robertson

*Ratings provided by FotMob*

GK: Alisson—6.3: Announced his comeback with a superb stop in the 43rd minute, denying Schade with an outstretched leg. Was powerless to prevent the winger's second-half effort from finding the net.

RB: Curtis Jones—8.0: Broke the deadlock with a composed finish from close range just before the hour mark. Showed some defensive frailties at times and failed to clear his lines in the buildup to Brentford's equalizer.

CB: Ibrahima Konaté—7.6: Solid at the back, but caught the eye most with his incisive long passes forward. Will be frustrated at failing to convert his headers in the opening stages of both halves.

CB: Virgil van Dijk—7.5: Commanding in the air throughout. Did an excellent job of completely nullifying Igor Thiago, who finished the match without a single shot on target across 90 minutes.

LB: Andy Robertson—7.2: Put in a dependable defensive shift until he was caught out when Schade grabbed Brentford's equalizer. Struggled to build any meaningful connection with Ngumoha in attack.

CM: Ryan Gravenberch—7.3: Made a few uncharacteristic errors in central midfield. Showed flashes of quality when driving forward and testing the goalkeeper, but those moments were too infrequent.

CM: Alexis Mac Allister—7.1: Looked closer to his best in the engine room. Produced no standout moments, but quietly orchestrated play and helped dictate the rhythm of the match, contributing three chances in the process.

RW: Mohamed Salah—7.8: Eager to crown his storied Liverpool career with a goal, but saw his best opportunity—a free kick—crash off the post. Came alive when given room to operate and punished Brentford on the break with a brilliant trivela assist to put his side ahead.

AM: Dominik Szoboszlai—7.6: Showed tremendous work rate by tracking back to cover his teammates' errors. Fashioned nearly all of Liverpool's most threatening chances and covered every blade of grass to do so.

LW: Rio Ngumoha—6.0: Dazzling footwork but little end product. Impressed with his physicality and ability to create space in the final third, but couldn't convert. Won over the home crowd with his defensive effort.

ST: Cody Gakpo—6.4: Another underwhelming display up front. Finished his afternoon with just two blocked shots over 90 minutes.

SUB: Florian Wirtz (73' for Ngumoha)—6.6: Saw what appeared to be a match-winning effort denied by Caoimhin Kelleher deep in stoppage time.

SUB: Jeremie Frimpong (74' for Salah)—6.4: Tidy on the ball and fashioned a dangerous opportunity that came to nothing.

SUB: Milos Kerkez (83' for Robertson)—N/A

SUB: Trey Nyoni (83' for Gravenberch)—N/A

SUB: Joe Gomez (90' for Konaté)—N/A
