Scholes Drops Bombshell: Eight Players Man Utd Must Offload — Including One Shocking Name

Paul Scholes has urged Manchester United to offload up to eight players this summer, with young center back Leny Yoro surprisingly among those he believes should be shown the door.

"They spent a significant amount on him, but I think he's found it difficult," Scholes told The Good, The Bad & The Football. "I think there's potential there, I think he needs more time to develop, but if you had to decide right now, I'd probably move him on."

The defensive line was a major concern for Scholes, who supported Matthijs de Ligt as a worthy first-choice starter but questioned whether Harry Maguire is up to the required standard, despite the popular center back having recently penned a contract extension.

"Look, I think he's been really impressive and he's made a remarkable comeback," Scholes acknowledged.

"What he's managed to do has been absolutely incredible. I'm genuinely delighted for him, but I'm thinking about a United side that wants to challenge for the league title and the Champions League, and that's the level United should be targeting.

"I'm not convinced you could achieve that with Maguire, unless you had someone like a Rio [Ferdinand] alongside him, then maybe, yes."

Shifting focus to the fullback positions, Scholes called for a total rebuild. Diogo Dalot may have escaped the former midfielder's criticism, but Patrick Dorgu, Noussair Mazraoui and Luke Shaw were all identified as players who should be sold.

"He was brought in as a wingback and he hasn't really featured in that role," Scholes said of Dorgu. "I'd probably sell. I'm not entirely sure what his best position is. If you keep him, he's just going to be a squad player."

On Mazraoui, Scholes added: "Sell. I'm not sure where he fits into the setup. He's been used as a right-sided center half but they no longer play with three center backs. If they did use three, you might include him as one of five or six, but I think the time has probably come to let him leave."

Shaw, meanwhile, received some rare words of praise from Scholes before the former midfielder delivered his final judgment.

"When he was playing regularly, I don't think there's a better left back on the planet, not just in Europe," Scholes declared. "But if you're asking me now—and he's had a reasonable season in terms of appearances—I'd sell him. He simply doesn't feature in enough games."

Scholes then turned his focus to a position he knows intimately. Central midfield is expected to be a key area of business in the upcoming transfer window, with Casemiro's free transfer departure underlining the need for new additions.

"Another one who turned things around, but they need to strengthen in that area," Scholes said of the Brazilian.

Scholes insisted Manuel Ugarte should follow Casemiro out of the club—"I think he'll go"—and pointed to Mason Mount as another potential departure after several injury-plagued seasons on the periphery of the squad.

"I'd probably sell him—and I do rate him, he's a quality footballer," Scholes explained. "But he's never going to displace Bruno Fernandes. I'm not sure what other role he could fill and he just doesn't get enough game time."

Finally, Scholes handed the last exit ticket to unsettled striker Joshua Zirkzee, who has attracted interest from Saudi Arabia after struggling for playing time across his two seasons at Old Trafford.
