Semenyo Stuns Man City with Brilliant FA Cup Final Winner Against Chelsea

Antoine Semenyo's brilliant backheel strike handed Manchester City their eighth FA Cup title in a hard-fought 1–0 win over Chelsea in Saturday's showpiece final.

City had been widely expected to dismantle their out-of-sorts opponents at Wembley, but a largely forgettable opening half offered little in the way of genuine excitement. Erling Haaland was central to City's best moments, with an offside tap-in at the back post followed by a fierce effort that was pushed away by Robert Sánchez.

Tension mounted after the interval as Pep Guardiola's side found it difficult to carve out clear chances, but a flash of brilliance from Semenyo provided the crucial breakthrough. The January arrival's exquisite flick broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute and put City firmly in control of the trophy.

Chelsea pushed forward in search of a late leveller, but City's resolute backline stood firm to claim yet another FA Cup crown for the Manchester club, completing a domestic double following their Carabao Cup final success back in March.

Winners and Losers

Winners

Antoine Semenyo

City have looked sharp in attack over recent weeks, yet their creative difficulties at Wembley left them in need of someone to step up. Thankfully, Semenyo delivered.

The Ghanaian international was a persistent threat along City's right flank, displaying the boldness on the ball that several of his teammates lacked. Semenyo's unpredictability caused Chelsea constant headaches, with the winger equally dangerous cutting inside or driving to the byline, and a clever finish turned out to be the game's decisive moment.

City's other January addition also merits significant praise. Former Chelsea centre-back Marc Guéhi played a key role in Crystal Palace's FA Cup final win against City last season, and an equally commanding defensive showing kept Chelsea largely at bay. Winning most of his individual battles and displaying excellent composure in possession, Guéhi returned to torment his former club.

Loser

Pep Guardiola, Omar Marmoush, Erling Haaland

Guardiola has a well-known habit of tweaking his tactics and selection for major occasions, and Omar Marmoush found himself on the wrong end of his manager's overcomplication at Wembley. Having scored in consecutive matches, the striker was handed a starting berth at the expense of Rayan Cherki, tasked with operating alongside Haaland in the attacking third.

The gamble ultimately misfired, however, with Marmoush barely registering during the opening half and accumulating just 10 touches. Predictably, Guardiola corrected the error at the break, introducing Cherki in place of the Egyptian to inject some life into City's play.

Man City Player Ratings vs. Chelsea (4-4-2)

Rodri vs. Chelsea

*Ratings provided by FotMob*

GK: James Trafford—7.1: Aside from a few shaky moments after the break, Trafford was largely a bystander throughout the match.

RB: Matheus Nunes—7.5: Provided attacking support to Antoine Semenyo as City looked to exploit Chelsea's left side. Showed the necessary physicality when dealing with Marc Cucurella's forward runs.

CB: Abdukodir Khusanov—7.3: The centre-back's combative style was mostly effective, with Khusanov throwing himself into challenges against Chelsea's forwards—though a few incidents in his own penalty area prompted brief VAR checks.

CB: Marc Guéhi—7.8: An unusual quirk in the new FA Cup regulations allowed Guéhi, who had already been eliminated from the competition with Crystal Palace at Macclesfield earlier this campaign, to feature at Wembley. Put in a flawless display against his former club.

LB: Nico O'Reilly—7.6: The Carabao Cup final hero was considerably more subdued here, unable to pose a goal threat with his late runs into the box. Defended solidly, nonetheless.

RM: Antoine Semenyo—7.6: Consistently troubled Cucurella with his energy and physicality, frequently featuring in City's most dangerous attacking moves. A cheeky flick proved to be the match-winner.

CM: Rodri—6.9: A low-key performance on his comeback from injury. Kept the ball moving in midfield without ever drawing the spotlight.

CM: Bernardo Silva—7.0: One moment of lost concentration handed Chelsea a decent opening, but Silva was otherwise excellent in what may be his final cup final appearance for City.

LM: Jérémy Doku—7.7: Chelsea made a deliberate effort to crowd out Doku, which curtailed his influence early on. He grew into the game, however, finding more space as opponents' legs began to tire.

ST: Omar Marmoush—6.3: Squandered the only half-chance that fell his way in what was an underwhelming outing. Marmoush's unexpected inclusion in the starting XI proved a misstep.

ST: Erling Haaland—7.8: Haaland's search for his first cup final goal in City colours goes on, though he at least contributed with a tidy cross toward the near post to set up Semenyo.

SUB: Rayan Cherki (46' for Marmoush)—7.0: Brought some flair off the bench without ever truly threatening Chelsea's goal.

SUB: Mateo Kovačić (65' for Rodri)—6.3: Injected some welcome dynamism into the central midfield area.

Subs not used: Gianluigi Donnarumma (GK), Rúben Dias, John Stones, Nathan Aké, Tijjani Reijnders, Phil Foden, Savinho.
