Senne Lammens Fires Back at Paul Scholes After Stinging Criticism

Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens made clear that criticism from former players will never affect him, following some pointed remarks made by Paul Scholes.

Lammens found himself under scrutiny after United's loss to Manchester City last month, a match decided by an Erling Haaland goal that officials have since acknowledged should have been disallowed.

That did not prevent United icon Scholes from questioning Lammens, stating the "jury is still out" on whether the Belgian is truly capable of leading the club to glory.

"What team have you seen win the Premier League without a top-class goalkeeper?" Scholes said. "Lammens might be that, I don't know, I think the jury's probably still out on that."

Now on international duty with Belgium, Lammens seized the opportunity to remind everyone precisely why the Red Devils brought him to the club.

"Playing football at Manchester United hasn't changed who I am," he said with a laugh. "You need to be mentally tough and self-assured when so many people are voicing their opinions. I can understand that isn't easy for everybody.

"I love playing all those Premier League matches. Premier League, Nations League ... that doesn't feel any different."

Lammens's Composure Is His Strongest Attribute

It is easy to overlook that a key part of Lammens's appeal is his straightforward, no-fuss approach.

He was brought in during 2025 as something of an opposite to his predecessor, André Onana, whose string of errors and poor judgment had left both supporters and coaches exasperated. United sought a goalkeeper with a composed mind and dependable hands.

Lammens has not been without his own blunders—a critical error at the World Cup contributed to Belgium's exit in the quarterfinals—but the 24-year-old has bounced back and continues to perform with consistency.

"Senne's strength is that he always remains the same regardless of the circumstances," Belgium manager Mark van Bommel reflected. "That's his character and his quality.

"If you see how quickly he adapted to Manchester United ... the club is richer, the stadium is bigger than at Antwerp. He has a good connection with his defenders. That's worth a compliment."

United are well aware that the Old Trafford spotlight carries more pressure than almost anywhere else in the Premier League—or the world—making someone as cool-headed as Lammens an invaluable asset.
