Sergio Ramos Drops Bombshell Career Move as Contract Countdown Begins—Report

Sergio Ramos is determined to lead Monterrey to Liga MX Apertura 2025 championship success before year's end, though recent reports suggest the iconic Real Madrid defender will not remain with Rayados when 2026 arrives.

While it appears Ramos won't stay in Liga MX, hanging up his boots doesn't seem to be an option either, based on reports from El Chiringuito's Juanfe Sanz.

"Sergio Ramos has made the decision to conclude his stint at Monterrey," Sanz reported. "His goal is to secure a championship during the [Apertura 2025] playoffs, but he desires to begin a fresh chapter in his football journey and retirement isn't in his plans."

Per TUDN, Sanz's revelation, later verified by MARCA, took Rayados management by surprise.

The former Real Madrid central defender inked a 12-month deal with Monterrey at the beginning of 2025. Monterrey's sporting director José Antonio Noriega recently revealed that the club was already discussing contract extension possibilities with Ramos.

Ramos has appeared 31 times for Rayados this season, netting seven goals and establishing himself as a key player during Apertura 2025, starting 17 of 18 matches under Domènec Torrent's management.

Monterrey and Ramos Haven't Reached Agreement on Extension Terms

Before arriving in Liga MX, Ramos remained clubless for six months following the conclusion of his second stint at hometown team Sevilla during summer 2024.

It required several months for him to regain match fitness with Rayados, but since the 2025 Club World Cup, Ramos has excelled with the Mexican outfit. His endurance has arguably been his greatest asset, demonstrating capability to handle the campaign's demanding fixture list.

Despite Ramos's resurgence, TUDN's coverage indicates that a potential reason for the Spaniard's inclination to seek new opportunities lies in disagreements between Ramos and Rayados regarding extension conditions.

Monterrey allegedly prefers extending Ramos for six months, or one year with a mid-term review clause. The player, conversely, seeks a fully guaranteed 12-month extension to finalize any new agreement.

Should no compromise be reached within the coming month, Ramos could depart as a free agent, with potential suitors likely to pursue him given his recent performances. The Saudi Pro League appears as a possible destination, having previously attempted to recruit Ramos in 2023 following his Paris Saint-Germain departure.

Currently, however, Ramos remains concentrated on claiming silverware in Mexico. Monterrey hold a 2–0 advantage over Club América entering Saturday night's quarterfinal second leg, ideally positioned to progress to the semifinals as the club pursues their first Liga MX title since 2019.
