Six Explosive Transfer Battles Set to Explode on Deadline Day

Weeks and months of transfer market activity draw to a close for Europe's top divisions on Tuesday, as Deadline Day marks the end of the summer window.

Once again, the Premier League has led the charge, but continental powerhouses, most notably Real Madrid, have also made their presence felt in the market.

And with the deadline rapidly closing in, there's still plenty of room for drama and unpredictability. Clubs will make eleventh-hour attempts to sharpen their squads for the campaign ahead, and numerous players are desperately seeking clarity on their futures.

This summer has certainly delivered its share of classic transfer sagas, and uncertainty continues to hang over several high-profile situations heading into the window's final day.

Here are six transfer sagas to keep an eye on this Deadline Day.

Julián Alvarez to Arsenal

Julián Alvarez's public declaration of his "dream" to play for Barcelona was firmly rejected in the Spanish capital. Atlético Madrid have maintained throughout the summer that they will not sell to their domestic rivals, who tabled a $135 million offer back in mid-July.

Barça have been patient, holding out hope that Atléti would eventually relent. Alvarez has attempted to persuade his employers, but they have refused to shift their position.

The Argentine was met with fierce hostility upon his return to the Metropolitano, and it appeared there was simply no way Alvarez could carry on with Los Rojiblancos. Atléti are willing to negotiate with Arsenal at the right price, but the Gunners have been unable to persuade Alvarez to abandon his Barcelona ambitions.

Barça have changed course, agreeing a deal for Arsenal's Gabriel Jesus for a modest fee, while the Gunners themselves may now pursue Lyon youngster Malick Fofana.

Alvarez has some fence-mending to do with the Atléti supporters.

Man City & Tottenham's Winger Pursuits

Tottenham Hotspur responded to their opening weekend loss at Brentford by accelerating their pursuit of Omar Marmoush, and their 2–0 defeat to Newcastle United appeared to reignite their urgency in the market.

Spurs reached an agreement with Iliman Ndiaye on Sunday morning and were optimistic about sending Richarlison back to the Toffees. The two deals were initially thought to be unrelated, but recent developments suggest they are closely intertwined.

The Toffees have struggled to agree personal terms with their former striker, which has complicated Spurs' pursuit of Ndiaye. Meanwhile, with Cody Gakpo remaining at Liverpool, Manchester City have shifted their focus to the Everton winger.

With Ndiaye apparently heading to City, Spurs are looking elsewhere. Roberto De Zerbi is keen to add another attacker to his squad, and it appears he may be set for a reunion with Mykhailo Mudryk, whom he guided during his breakthrough at Shakhtar Donetsk.

Enzo Fernández to Man City

This one has been simmering all summer. Enzo Fernández flirted with the prospect of leaving Chelsea during Liam Rosenior's tenure, before Real Madrid were touted as potential suitors for the Argentine.

Madrid looked in other directions, and Man City have emerged as Fernández's most probable destination for some time now. The Cityzens are poised to complete their costly midfield overhaul with the $162 million acquisition of the former Benfica man.

Bernardo Silva and Rodri have departed to both sides of the Clásico divide in Spain, while Tijjani Reijnders was sold at a profit to Saudi Arabia despite an underwhelming sole season at the Etihad Stadium. City first broke the British transfer record to sign Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest, and recently wrapped up the $117 million signing of Lille's Ayyoub Bouaddi.

Fernández appears to be the final piece of the puzzle, having been successfully transformed into a box-to-box midfielder by Pep Guardiola's successor, Enzo Maresca, at Stamford Bridge.

Ismaïla Sarr to Liverpool

Liverpool have notably accumulated a collection of wide players who favour the left flank, including Bradley Barcola, who became the club's second-most expensive signing on the penultimate day of the window.

Andoni Iraola values versatility in his wide players, and it appears he intends to address Mohamed Salah's absence through multiple solutions rather than a single marquee signing.

Nevertheless, Liverpool have been active in the market for a right-sided forward in the latter stages of the window. They were initially rebuffed by Brighton & Hove Albion over Yankuba Minteh, and are now finding it difficult to turn their interest in Ismaïla Sarr into a completed deal.

Sarr is keen on the move, but Palace are standing firm. Liverpool have had two bids turned down so far, and news of Gakpo's decision to stay suggests the club are not overly confident of getting a deal over the line.

Joshua Zirkzee's Man Utd Future

Joshua Zirkzee's stylish spell at Bologna captivated many Serie A romantics, but the Dutchman has found it difficult to establish himself in the Premier League.

His Manchester United career has largely been one to forget. He has struggled to find consistency and form throughout, and it has appeared likely all summer that he will head back to Serie A.

Zirkzee has rejected a loan move to Fiorentina, who have been active in the market and require a replacement for Moise Kean. The former Bayern Munich prospect prefers a switch to Juventus, but the Bianconeri's interest in Newcastle United's Nick Woltemade has cast doubt over their pursuit of Zirkzee.

Juve have allowed Jonathan David to join Atlético Madrid and are now focusing their efforts on signing Woltemade, who does not appear to feature in Matthias Jaissle's plans on Tyneside.

With first-team minutes likely to be scarce at Old Trafford, Zirkzee may need to reconsider Fiorentina's offer.

Jack Grealish to Everton

Everton are anticipating Ndiaye's departure on Deadline Day and are hopeful of securing the return of Jack Grealish.

Grealish, who played a significant role in Man City's historic 2022–23 treble-winning season, fell out of favour with Pep Guardiola and was reduced to a peripheral role before joining the Toffees on loan last summer. It appeared to be an ideal fit, and the winger made a bright start. However, a foot injury in January brought his season to a premature end.

As a result, there is a sense of unfinished business for the 30-year-old on Merseyside. A further loan is being discussed, independent of the Ndiaye deal, with Grealish placing Everton above other interested clubs.

Former club Aston Villa and Sunderland had also been mentioned as potential destinations.
