Son Heung-min Opens Up About the Hidden Truth Behind His Devastating Playoff Penalty Heartbreak
Son Heung-min attributed his devastating penalty miss during LAFC's MLS Western Conference Semifinal defeat to Vancouver Whitecaps to an unexpected muscle cramp that struck at the crucial moment.
Though he's accustomed to disappointment and near-misses from his time with Tottenham Hotspur, this Vancouver loss will be particularly painful, especially considering he netted twice, including a dramatic 95th-minute free kick that sent the match to extra time after LAFC found themselves 2-0 down at the break.
LAFC couldn't capitalize during the additional 30 minutes, despite having a numerical advantage after Vancouver was reduced to nine players due to a red card and an injury. Son initiated the penalty shootout with a shot that struck the post, paving the way for Vancouver's victory.
"I brought this team into extra time, but it seems like [the defeat] is my responsibility," Son reflected after the match. "I cherish these situations, and always aim to deliver for my teams.
"In the dying moments of extra time, I experienced a muscle cramp and didn't feel right, but I attempted to take responsibility, and when I went to strike the ball, I felt it again, the cramp, and my shot wasn't as precise as it could have been."
Despite Son outperforming his fellow superstar Thomas Müller, it proved insufficient for LAFC's progression, with the ex-Premier League ace finishing with 12 goals and four assists across 13 appearances in the MLS regular season and playoffs.

Though Son's LAFC couldn't reach the Conference Final, the exciting encounter and his spectacular free-kick strike captured global attention, showcasing MLS on the world stage.
"We ought to recognize that the match was captivating and that's what we strive for," Son commented. "While we're competing in the playoffs, we aim to deliver quality entertainment.
"Sadly, it favored Vancouver, but I believe overall the game benefited MLS. It was massive. Sometimes soccer is unpredictable, just like this. That's the reason we adore this sport."
Son and LAFC now turn their attention to the 2026 MLS campaign, where they'll work under new leadership after Steve Cherundolo's time with the organization concluded alongside the end of the postseason, as previously confirmed.
However, regarding his inaugural season, Son departs with predominantly positive sentiments, despite the crushing conclusion.
"It's been wonderful. The community embraced me amazingly, and I treasured every moment," he expressed. "But ultimately, I'm here to secure silverware for this club. Today we fell short, but next season I want to ensure we succeed in every tournament.
"LAFC will return more formidable than before."
