Son Heung-min's LAFC Debut: Which Explosive Matchups Could Mark His MLS Arrival?

LAFC experienced a significant week in terms of transfers, completing the acquisition of Son Heung-min on a contract extending through 2027 at minimum, setting a new MLS transfer record with an estimated $26 million payment to Tottenham Hotspur.

Nevertheless, uncertainty remains regarding when the South Korean star will make his MLS debut. What is confirmed is his inaugural home appearance, scheduled for LAFC's match against San Diego FC on Aug. 31.

Prior to that fixture, Son is anticipated to take the field for LAFC and gradually integrate into competitive action following his participation in Tottenham's European preseason campaign, which featured his farewell match in Seoul versus Newcastle United.

"My physical condition is excellent after completing preseason training," Son stated during his unveiling press conference. "I've joined this club to compete, and I'm prepared to contribute. However, some preparatory work remains, and I'll collaborate with the technical staff to make my debut as quickly as possible."

Son's earliest possible appearance for LAFC could occur on Saturday, Aug. 9, when the team travels to face Chicago Fire FC in an uncommon inter-conference matchup. Should he not feature then, the subsequent away fixtures are Aug. 16 versus the New England Revolution and Aug. 23 against FC Dallas.

Presently, LAFC occupies sixth position in the MLS Western Conference standings and aims to sustain their momentum while seeking to climb higher before the 2025 MLS Cup Playoffs commence.

Son is projected to operate on the flanks, potentially shifting to the left wing since LAFC's second-highest earner, Denis Bouanga, excels as one of MLS's premier right-wing talents.

Supporters wishing to follow these matches can attend in person or stream via MLS Season Pass on Apple TV, which provides coverage of all MLS and Leagues Cup fixtures for viewers across the United States and globally.

"Simply because I succeeded in Europe doesn't ensure I'll excel here," Son remarked. "As I embark on this new journey, I believe I'm beginning from scratch, and starting fresh means I aspire to achieve legendary status. That remains my ambition."
