South Africa and Canada open the round of 32 at the World Cup on Sunday after both sides finished as runners-up in their respective groups.
It's the co-host that will command most of the pre-game spotlight as it competes in its first-ever knockout stage match at the World Cup, while South Africa has also advanced past the group phase for the first time in the nation's history.
By ending up second in Group B, Canada has surrendered home advantage in the round of 32, and must instead make the trip south to California. The Canucks will still enjoy strong support at SoFi Stadium, though, as they head into Sunday's clash as heavy favorites.
A frustrating loss to Switzerland in their last outing shouldn't overshadow what was an otherwise impressive group stage run, during which Canada claimed their first-ever tournament victory with a dominant 6–0 thrashing of Qatar.
South Africa was far less prolific across its opening three fixtures, netting just twice yet still accumulating four points—level with Canada. Thapelo Maseko delivered the stunning winner against South Korea that sealed their place in the next round.
Expectations should be kept in check for Bafana Bafana, whose squad is limited in depth and overall quality, yet they have already shown themselves to be a tricky opponent. Canada would do well not to underestimate the potential for an upset.
