South Korea's Taegeuk Warriors Ignite Asia's 2026 World Cup Ambitions

Among Asian nations at the World Cup, no country has demonstrated the same level of consistency and achievement as South Korea.

Including the 2026 tournament on North American soil, the Taegeuk Warriors will be making their 12th appearance—four more than nearest competitor Japan—while their fourth-place finish as hosts in 2002 stands as the greatest achievement by any Asian nation at the tournament.

Matching that result may be unrealistic this time around, but a manageable group containing Mexico, South Africa and Czechia—competitive yet vulnerable opponents—alongside a seamless qualifying campaign has generated cautious confidence that Hong Myung-bo's squad can leave their mark.

The Road to the World Cup

South Korea cruised through qualifying, progressing across two group stages without suffering a single defeat. Hong's squad won 11 of their 16 matches and drew the other five, making them the only side on the continent to qualify with a perfect unbeaten record.

Goals flowed freely, with an impressive tally of 40 scored throughout the qualification campaign. Experienced striker Son Heung-min was the primary scoring threat, while Paris Saint-Germain's Lee Kang-in was frequently the architect behind the goals.

Manager: Hong Myung-bo

Hong Myung-bo

Hong is serving his second stint as South Korea's head coach, having previously guided the team at the 2014 World Cup, where he stepped down following an early exit without a single victory.

This time around, both results and performances have taken a step forward. The former LA Galaxy defender has demonstrated a greater readiness to select players in good form and encourage his team to play with more attacking intent.

Nevertheless, he continues to place results above entertainment. This approach hasn't satisfied all fans, with some feeling he remains overly conservative—a sentiment that has even prompted jeers during recent friendly matches.

How South Korea Plays

Hong's South Korea typically sets up with a back three, though in reality it frequently functions more like a back five, with the wing-backs dropping deeper rather than consistently bombing forward. This defensive setup is hard to break down, but it can also restrict South Korea's ability to attack.

In the attacking third, the Taegeuk Warriors lean heavily on Son and Lee, who operate on the flanks around a central forward. Both players move fluidly—cutting inside, stretching wide and linking up well—keeping opponents on their toes at all times.

However, when teams successfully neutralize those two, South Korea can find it difficult to generate chances and goals.

Ones to Watch

Son Heung-min and Yang Min-hyeok.

X-Factor: Despite being in the latter stages of his career, Son Heung-min remains South Korea's most influential player. The Los Angeles FC forward possesses the ability to unlock any defense in world football and will be eager to make up for a forgettable 2022 World Cup campaign.

Breakout Star: If Son represents South Korea's present, Yang Min-hyeok embodies its future. The dynamic young winger—gifted with a sharp instinct for goal—broke records in the K League before being recruited by Tottenham Hotspur, Son's former club, in 2024.

What South Korea Will Be Wearing

South Korea's home shirt is a bold red, incorporating a subtle tiger-camouflage pattern woven throughout the fabric, while the away kit takes its cues from the nation's national flower, the mugunghwa, featuring a predominantly purple base with floral accents.

South Korea's Predicted Starting XI

South Korea's potential starting XI at the 2026 World Cup.

Attention will inevitably fall on South Korea's attack this summer, which will undoubtedly feature Son and Lee. Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Hwang Hee-chan is the frontrunner to lead the line between them, though Beşiktaş striker Oh Hyeon-gyu remains a viable alternative.

In the middle of the park, Paik Seung-ho of Birmingham City and Kim Jin-gyu of Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors are anticipated to start, with Lee Tae-seok and Kim Moon-hwan deployed as wing-backs on each side.

Defensively, experienced goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu retains his status as the nation's first choice, while Bayern Munich's Kim Min-jae serves as the cornerstone of the back three.

Current Form

South Korea has kept themselves busy since wrapping up their qualifying campaign in June 2025, taking part in numerous friendlies with varying outcomes.

On the positive side, Hong's team has claimed victories over Ghana, Bolivia, Paraguay and the USMNT, and held group-stage rival Mexico to a draw. On the flip side, they have endured heavy losses to Brazil and Côte d'Ivoire.

Such form suggests South Korea should have enough quality to advance from the group stage, but may find the going tough against elite opposition in the knockout rounds.

What We Can Expect From South Korea Fans

South Korea fan

Despite recently directing boos toward their manager, South Korea's supporters are far from pessimistic; they tend to be more measured in their expressions than most fan bases.

That doesn't mean they won't show up in style—expect imaginative face paint, waves of national flags, celebratory conga lines after goals and a vibrant sea of red filling the stands.

The country also has one of the highest proportions of female football supporters, making it one of the most forward-thinking and inclusive fan communities in the world.

National Expectations

Son Heung-min

Given their strong qualifying run and a relatively kind group draw, South Korean supporters have good reason to be cautiously hopeful that the team can, at minimum, advance beyond the group stage this summer—and potentially go further.

That said, concerns remain over South Korea's vulnerability against top-tier opposition and their heavy dependence on Son and Lee. If both players are healthy and performing at their best, however, there's every chance they could spring a surprise or two along the way.
