Spain and Belgium's Fierce Rivalry Laid Bare Before Their Epic World Cup Showdown

Spain and Belgium's Fierce Rivalry Laid Bare Before Their Epic World Cup Showdown

Spain and Belgium have long been fixtures at the top of international football, clashing regularly since their inaugural encounter way back in 1921.

Both European powerhouses have enjoyed standout generations in the 21st century—though Spain's has far eclipsed Belgium's—making for some compelling contests over recent decades, with yet another mouth-watering showdown now on the cards.

La Roja face the Red Devils in the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Cup, with a place in the last four against France up for grabs.

Spain has been largely imperious this summer, bouncing back from an early stumble against Cabo Verde to reel off four straight clean-sheet victories. Belgium has had a bumpier ride, winning just two matches in regulation, but the team is hitting its stride at just the right moment.

With Friday's showdown approaching, here's a look at how these two sides have historically matched up.

The Last Time Spain and Belgium Faced Off

Belgium vs. Spain

Spain and Belgium haven't crossed paths in a decade. Their most recent competitive encounter goes back even further, with the 2016 fixture being nothing more than a friendly played at the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels.

Belgium's lineup was packed with elite talent that day, with Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard, and Thibaut Courtois all featuring, while Spain's squad included the likes of Sergio Ramos, Sergio Busquets, and David Silva—the latter proving especially influential on the final result.

The former Manchester City maestro was in inspired form as Spain cruised to a commanding 2–0 win, with clinical goals on either side of the break—one from the penalty spot—sealing the victory.

Spain controlled the game from start to finish, predictably dominating possession while also generating more shots and shots on target than their hosts. The only consolation for Belgium was that the margin of defeat was narrower than in the previous meeting, when the Red Devils were hammered 5–0 back in 2009.

Friday's encounter between Spain and Belgium will be just the third time they've met at a World Cup. The first came at the 1986 tournament in Mexico, also at the quarterfinal stage, in a match that was incredibly tight between the two European sides.

Belgium took the lead through Jan Ceulemans and appeared on course for a slender win until Juan Señor leveled things up in the 85th minute. Extra time failed to produce a winner, and it was Belgian goalkeeper Jean-Marie Pfaff who emerged as the decisive figure, saving Eloy's penalty to clinch the shootout victory.

Spain would have the last laugh, however. The two nations met again just four years later in the group stage, and this time it was La Roja who prevailed thanks to a burst of first-half goals. Belgium's Patrick Vervoort equalized just three minutes after Míchel had converted from the spot, but Alberto Górriz put Spain back in front only seven minutes later.

The game ended 2–1, securing Spain's position as group winners, though both the Iberians and Belgium were subsequently eliminated in the round of 16.

La Roja Dominate 105-Year Rivalry

Spain and Belgium have met 22 times previously (excluding Olympic competition), and it is the former who have come out on top more often than not.

Belgium has claimed some notable victories along the way, most memorably the shootout triumph in 1986, but their total win count stands at just five, with none coming after that famous day in Mexico.

Spain, by contrast, has recorded 12 wins, including seven of the last eight meetings. All five clashes in the 21st century have gone La Roja's way, with a combined score of 13–1 highlighting just how thoroughly they have dominated.

Belgium will be eager to turn the tide this Friday, but the historical record suggests that will be no easy feat.
