Spain could hardly escape a repeat of what unfolded last summer.
The 2026 World Cup champions, who edged Argentina 1–0 in Sunday's final at MetLife Stadium, assembled on the victory stage for their customary celebratory team photo — only to be promptly photo-bombed by U.S. President Donald Trump, who had joined FIFA president Gianni Infantino in the (arguably solo) task of presenting the squad with the golden World Cup trophy.
It was an instant flashback to the 2025 Club World Cup, when Trump similarly positioned himself among the Chelsea players as they lifted their trophy on the same championship stage in East Rutherford, N.J.
Spain's skipper, 30-year-old star midfielder Rodri — who also claimed the tournament's Golden Ball award — was spotted gently attempting to guide Trump off the stage after receiving the trophy. Infantino was likewise seen jogging over to Trump, softly tapping his arm and gesturing toward the sideline in an effort to move him out of the frame.

The efforts proved futile, as Trump remained planted on the right side of the Spanish squad by the time Rodri raised the World Cup trophy aloft in triumph.
Spain, however, simply edited the President out of the image before sharing it across their social media platforms later that night.

President Trump Heavily Booed at World Cup Final
Shortly after Jennifer Hudson's national anthem performance, cameras cut to President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump, who were seated alongside Infantino in a stadium suite. The crowd instantly broke into loud, widespread booing — a reception strikingly similar to what the President encountered at Madison Square Garden during Game 3 of the NBA Finals in early June.
Trump was also met with heavy booing as he walked out onto the pitch following the match for the trophy presentation ceremony.

The World Cup final marked the first tournament match Trump attended this summer; however, it was far from his first involvement in the competition.

Trump drew considerable criticism after intervening in the red card decision involving U.S. men's national team striker Folarin Balogun. The President acknowledged personally calling his close associate Infantino regarding the referee's contentious ruling. Balogun's red card suspension was lifted one day before the USMNT's round of 16 clash with Belgium, allowing him to feature in the match. UEFA, Belgium, and several other federations raised concerns over potential "political interference" in football's most prestigious event.
Infantino also presented Trump with the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize back in December during the World Cup draw; however, no nominees or finalists for the award were ever publicly listed. FIFA also provided minimal information regarding how Trump — or future recipients — would be selected.
