Spain Set to Battle Belgium: Predicted Starting XI for High-Stakes World Cup Quarterfinal Clash

Spain is eager to secure a spot in the World Cup semifinal for the first time in 16 years when they take on Belgium at SoFi Stadium on Friday.

Since claiming their maiden world title in 2010, Spain had struggled to advance past the round of 16 at any subsequent tournament until this summer, but Luis de la Fuente's reigning European champions are a completely different beast. Long considered among the competition's frontrunners, they have navigated all five of their North American fixtures undefeated and without conceding a single goal.

De la Fuente's adjustments from game to game have largely been subtle, with the experienced coach placing his trust in a familiar group of key players. Whether he will make changes for a challenging quarterfinal clash against a revitalized Belgium side remains to be seen.

Here's how Spain could line up in Inglewood.

GK: Unai Simón—Despite having Joan García and David Raya available in his squad, De la Fuente's continued trust in Simón has proven well-founded, with the 29-year-old yet to be beaten between the posts.

RB: Pedro Porro—A fierce competition between Marcos Llorente and Porro for the right back position has seen the Tottenham Hotspur defender start both knockout stage matches, including netting in the win over Austria.

CB: Pau Cubarsí—Belgium will be looking to test Cubarsí and his defensive partners more than previous opponents have, with Spain having surrendered just 1.5 expected goals throughout this summer's campaign.

CB: Aymeric Laporte—The 32-year-old has been a cornerstone of Spain's five consecutive clean sheets, bringing vital experience to an imposing central defensive partnership.

LB: Marc Cucurella—The new Real Madrid recruit has been characteristically energetic along Spain's left flank, tenaciously challenging attackers while also contributing meaningfully in the attacking phase.

CM: Rodri—Rodri was outstanding in the 1–0 victory over Portugal in the round of 16, even if his exuberant celebrations rubbed former Manchester City teammate Bernardo Silva the wrong way.

CM: Pedri—The slight playmaker doesn't look quite as settled in De la Fuente's midfield setup as he does in Hansi Flick's, yet his quality tends to shine through even when he falls short of his best.

RW: Lamine Yamal—"I can do way better. I am really demanding with myself," Yamal has warned ahead of the match, a troubling signal for a Belgian backline that has been surrendering high-quality opportunities.

AM: Dani Olmo—De la Fuente may be tempted to introduce Fabián Ruiz or round of 16 hero Mikel Merino into the midfield mix, but Olmo has done enough so far to hold onto his starting role.

LW: Álex Baena—Nico Williams is still short of full match fitness and Baena has stepped up impressively in his place. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

ST: Mikel Oyarzabal—Oyarzabal has been absolutely clinical for Spain, despite some subdued outings sandwiched between braces against Saudi Arabia and Austria this summer. The Real Sociedad forward has registered 24 goal contributions across his last 18 appearances for the national side.
