Spain Unveils Stunning 2026 World Cup Squad: Historic Milestone Shakes Up the Full Roster

Spain faces enormous expectations heading into the 2026 World Cup following a string of disappointing exits in their previous three tournament appearances.

The 2010 world champions suffered a group stage exit in 2014 and were knocked out in the round of 16 in both 2018 and 2022, yet confidence within the squad remains strong after their Euro 2024 victory served as a powerful reminder of Spain's quality on the world stage.

The lead-up to Luis de la Fuente's squad announcement has been overshadowed by a series of injury concerns. Lamine Yamal left supporters anxious when his Barcelona campaign was cut short, while his club colleague Fermín López was subsequently ruled out of the tournament after suffering a fractured metatarsal.

Even so, Spain is widely anticipated to be a major force across the United States, Canada and Mexico this summer, and here are the 26 players chosen by De la Fuente to represent their nation.

Dean Huijsen

For the first time in the storied history of the World Cup, not a single player in the Spain squad is currently plying their trade at Real Madrid.

Forward Gonzalo García was always considered an unlikely selection, but Madrid supporters had hoped to see at least one of their Spanish defensive options included. Center back Dean Huijsen seemed the most probable candidate, yet the 21-year-old has been notably omitted from the squad.

Similarly, Raúl Asencio and left back options Álvaro Carreras and Fran García have all missed out. Even Dani Carvajal, who is set to depart Madrid at the end of the season, has been passed over by De la Fuente.

In reality, this shift has been building at Madrid for a number of years. Los Blancos had no players represented in the Euro 2020 squad and just three at Euro 2024—Carvajal, Joselu and Nacho Fernández.

Huijsen has been a consistent presence under De la Fuente when fit. He featured in the March squad and completed the full 90 minutes in Spain's most recent outing, a goalless draw against Egypt, but has ultimately failed to secure his place in the World Cup roster.
