Spurs' Top Managerial Candidate Withdraws From Running—While Preferred Choice Signals Willingness to Take the Helm

Former Monaco head coach Adi Hütter has firmly denied reports linking him with a potential move to Tottenham Hotspur before the season concludes, though separate reports indicate Spurs have received an encouraging development in their pursuit of preferred candidate Roberto De Zerbi.

Igor Tudor departed his role as interim manager on Sunday, just 44 days after stepping in for Thomas Frank, leaving Spurs just one point clear of the relegation zone with seven matches remaining. Hütter had been considered a possible candidate prior to Tudor's appointment and was reportedly still being considered, but the Austrian has now dismissed the speculation entirely.

"Over recent days and weeks, my name has been increasingly connected with a number of clubs," Hütter said in an official statement. "However, as I made clear immediately following my departure from Monaco, I would prefer not to return to management until the beginning of the new season at the earliest.

"My stance on this has remained unchanged."

Spurs wasted little time moving on, however, as discussions surrounding their primary target began to intensify.

Roberto De Zerbi 'Open' to Tottenham Offer

Roberto De Zerbi

Former Brighton & Hove Albion and Marseille boss Roberto De Zerbi has long been regarded as a prime target for Spurs, though the club's relegation battle had made the Italian deeply hesitant to consider an immediate move. Until recently, De Zerbi had been intent on waiting until the season's end before making any decision.

That situation now appears to have shifted, with Gianluca Di Marzio first reporting that De Zerbi is now willing to hear what Spurs have to offer.

A five-year deal, complete with assurances of substantial transfer market investment over the summer, has been put forward for De Zerbi, though the possibility of being locked into that contract in the event of relegation remains a significant sticking point.

Spurs are reportedly reluctant to include a relegation release clause, but may look to enhance the package with a substantial financial incentive should De Zerbi successfully steer the club away from the drop.

Should De Zerbi prove impossible to persuade, Spurs may need to concede defeat on their top managerial targets. Mauricio Pochettino remains contracted with the USMNT beyond the World Cup, while Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola has pledged his commitment to the Cherries for the remainder of the season.

A further interim appointment remains a possibility, with Spurs reportedly considering a European coach paired with an assistant more closely acquainted with the club. Ryan Mason and Chris Hughton are among the names being mentioned.
