Star Midfielder's World Cup Dreams Shattered as Mexico's Injury Nightmare Deepens
The Mexican national squad was dealt a crushing blow on Friday when it was announced that key midfielder Marcel Ruiz suffered an ACL tear and will be unavailable for the 2026 World Cup.
Ruiz picked up the injury during Toluca's Concacaf Champions Cup match against MLS club San Diego FC. The midfielder was competing for possession with center-back Manu Duah when he came down awkwardly on his right leg and immediately collapsed while clutching the back of his knee.
The player's immediate response showed a combination of shock and obvious concern, as though he instinctively realized something serious had occurred. Ruiz managed to leave the field carefully but without assistance, which initially provided some hope about the injury's severity. However, that hope was quickly dashed when Toluca issued an official statement confirming the worst-case scenario.
"[Toluca] announces that our player Marcel Ruiz sustained a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament and medial meniscus injury in his right knee during the opening leg of the Concacaf Champions Cup round of 16 match in San Diego," the club's statement declared.
"Our midfielder will have surgery in the coming days, and his rehabilitation period will vary based on his progress. Everyone within this organization feels deeply for this situation and stands behind him, hoping for his swift return. Stay strong, Marcel! You have our full support."
The projected rehabilitation period for the skilled midfielder ranges from nine months to a full year. Within just 48 hours, Mexico has lost two certain World Cup squad members to injury, as goalkeeper Luis Ángel Malagon will also miss the competition after rupturing his Achilles tendon on Tuesday evening.

From the beginning of 2025, Ruiz transformed from being completely overlooked, to the most notable absence from Javier Aguirre's El Tri squads, to a certain starter for the 2026 World Cup.
At 25 years of age, Ruiz fulfilled his potential and developed into Liga MX's premier midfielder, serving as the mastermind behind Toluca's consecutive championship victories. Ruiz's distinctive physical attributes are rarely found among Mexican midfielders, and combined with exceptional technical skills and superior football intelligence, Liga MX became his domain throughout the previous year.
Aguirre eventually provided him with an opportunity during the 2025 Gold Cup, and after being benched for the first match, he earned a starting position in the second game and seized his chance. Mexico proceeded to capture the 2025 Gold Cup title, and Ruiz has featured in all 14 of El Tri's matches since missing the tournament opener, starting 13 of those contests.
Ruiz was a certain starter for the 2026 World Cup, and it seemed that only a strong tournament showing stood between the 25-year-old and a move to European football.
"Marcel, the entire Mexico national team and all supporters stand with you during this difficult time," El Tri posted on social media after Ruiz's injury announcement. "We hope for your complete recovery and send you strength. You'll return stronger than ever!"

Mexico's midfield situation with fewer than 100 days remaining before their World Cup opener is troubling at minimum. While there's some hope regarding other prospects, there's increasing concern that Mexico's preferred midfield trio might all be unavailable or barely fit for the tournament.
Beyond Ruiz, Mexico's captain Edson Álvarez had ankle surgery and won't return until late April at the earliest. Additionally, 17-year-old Mexican prodigy Gilberto Mora hasn't featured since mid-January while dealing with persistent pubalgia, and there's no clear timeline for the youngster's comeback.
Mora's emergence only occurred after 2022 World Cup standout Luis Chávez, who was a consistent starter, suffered an ACL injury during the 2025 Gold Cup and hasn't played since last June.
Injuries are mounting significantly for Aguirre and El Tri, creating major challenges for the experienced coach, who must think creatively about his squad choices for the March international matches in two weeks.
Nevertheless, for a team that wasn't blessed with abundant talent initially, Mexico's current injury crisis undoubtedly damages their 2026 World Cup prospects, and no loss is more devastating than Ruiz's unavailability.
