Star-Studded Crowd Turns Out as USMNT Kicks Off Their 2026 World Cup Campaign Against Paraguay

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — President Donald Trump skipped the trip to SoFi Stadium for the U.S. men's national team's opening World Cup 2026 match against Paraguay.

More pressing matters awaited him back in Washington—specifically, overseeing arrangements for his 80th birthday celebration on the White House South Lawn this Sunday, featuring a UFC event before the cake makes its appearance. A brief two-minute phone call of encouragement to the squad before kickoff would have to do.

While Trump might dispute whether anyone else in the country (or the world) rivals his celebrity status, there were plenty of other recognizable faces scattered throughout the massive, 70,000-seat venue.

David Beckham and Tom Cruise

David Beckham has been such a constant fixture in U.S. commercials before, during and after World Cup broadcasts this summer that it was actually refreshing to spot the Inter Miami co-owner on the enormous suspended screen above the field without him promoting a product.

Instead, the former England star was seated in the premium section alongside Hollywood actor Tom Cruise, enjoying the match after the two had attended Beckham's Hollywood Walk of Fame induction ceremony earlier that day.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar spent 14 seasons suiting up for the Los Angeles Lakers at The Forum, just a short distance from SoFi Stadium. The USMNT's impressively energetic attacking play kept the scoreboard moving, though not quite at the pace the legendary center managed during his prime years on the hardwood.

Jason Sudeikis (Ted Lasso)

Jason Sudeikis could hardly have predicted how many opportunities his portrayal of Ted Lasso on the Apple TV+ comedy would open up across the soccer world. The frequent Premier League attendee managed to secure a role as an official World Cup ambassador.

The actor took to a large stage positioned at the center circle well before kickoff to address a stadium filled with empty seats or fans who weren't paying attention.

George Lucas

The mastermind behind Star Wars was seated in a chair fit for Emperor Palpatine himself. The in-stadium camera caught the notoriously private director at an unfortunate moment, as he was mid-bite into a burger.

Though Lucas isn't known as a soccer enthusiast, he may have been drawn to the game by U.S. left back Antonee Robinson, whose passion for the sci-fi saga runs so deep that he's earned the nickname 'Jedi.'

Sofia Vergara

The proud Colombian actress Sofia Vergara didn't just settle for a seat in the stands—she made her way onto the pitch itself, sharing her thoughts as a guest panelist for Spanish-language U.S. broadcaster Telemundo.

Owen Wilson

The comedic actor wasn't drawn out solely by the World Cup. A familiar face at LAFC games, Wilson has been fully caught up in the Lionel Messi craze sweeping MLS.

"I remember as a kid it was such a huge deal when Pele played for the [New York] Cosmos," Wilson told Fox back in 2023, "and it feels like that again with Messi except maybe even bigger. ... Even my mother is now really into it."

Wilson's frequent on-screen partner Vince Vaughan was also spotted entering the stadium through a separate entrance.

Jamie Foxx

There are few labels that don't apply to Jamie Foxx. Actor, producer, singer, entrepreneur, wearer of a bold orange beanie hat. Soccer fan can now be added to that ever-growing résumé.

Paris Hilton

The quintessential celebrity-for-celebrity's-sake was never going to miss a moment in the spotlight this big.

SoFi Stadium proved to be the ideal venue for a collision between two codes of football. Los Angeles Chargers safety Derwin James Jr. showed up at his usual home turf alongside his partner to catch the round-ball version of the sport in action.
