Steven Gerrard Eyes Stunning Comeback to Management After Shock Exit

Steven Gerrard is set to engage in discussions with Rangers regarding a remarkable comeback to Ibrox, according to numerous media reports.

The ex-Liverpool and England captain has remained unemployed since departing Saudi Pro League club Al Ettifaq in January, having previously spent three-and-a-half successful years at Rangers before attempting Premier League management with Aston Villa.

That specific endeavor proved unsuccessful, with Gerrard securing only 13 victories from 40 matches in all competitions before his dismissal. However, the 45-year-old is the leading candidate to replace Russell Martin in Glasgow following the Scotsman's unsuccessful reign that lasted merely 123 days.

BBC Sport indicates that Gerrard is "among several potential candidates" Rangers wish to interview, with the club's leadership pledging to execute a comprehensive recruitment process.

Gerrard's Rangers Achievements May Enable His Comeback

Gerrard, whose remarkable Liverpool playing career included more than 700 appearances across all competitions and captaining the team to their fifth Champions League triumph in 2005, remains beloved by Rangers fans.

He broke Celtic's nine-year stranglehold on the Scottish Premiership, claiming the championship in 2020–21, and remains the most recent Rangers manager to accomplish this achievement. Gerrard also established the groundwork for the club's journey to the 2021–22 Europa League final, having reached the round of 16 in both preceding seasons.

Upon leaving Rangers in November 2021, Gerrard described it as an enormous privilege to manage "such a legendary club," stating that helping the team secure a historic 55th league championship would "forever remain dear to my heart."

Gerrard also discussed the backing he experienced at Rangers during a recent Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast appearance, suggesting his openness to returning and completing what he left unfinished.

"I believed I had [support] perfectly at Rangers. Numerous coaching changes at Aston Villa and in Saudi Arabia didn't benefit me personally," he explained. "I'm currently savoring family time and pursuing many activities I previously couldn't.

"However, part of me still believes there's some unfinished business regarding my desire to tackle additional exciting opportunities. But I seek a specific type of opportunity. If ideally they become available, I'll seize them immediately. If not, I won't return. I want to join a team that will compete for trophies because I believe that environment suits me best."
