Steven Gerrard Issues Stern Warning to Liverpool Boss Arne Slot: 'He Needs to Stop'
Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard commended current boss Arne Slot for his team's display against Marseille, though he cautioned the Dutch manager to cease discussing the challenges posed by defensive setups.
Slot's team enjoyed themselves freely in the expansive space that Marseille's attacking approach provided during a comfortable 3–0 victory in what has been an otherwise challenging campaign. Much of Liverpool's struggles have occurred against sides that defend deeply in what modern football terms call "a low block."
Only last weekend, Burnley managed to secure a 1–1 draw at Anfield—resulting in jeers from the home supporters but earning Slot's admiration.
The ex-Feyenoord manager has consistently complained about the challenges of confronting these compact defensive formations and raised the topic once more following Wednesday's Champions League victory.
"I understand why we lack consistency and it's primarily related to when a match is open, it's completely different from facing a low block," Slot explained to TNT Sports. "You can't compare that with tonight's game when both sides want to press and build from the back. If we're inconsistent, it's due to our difficulties with low blocks."
"He should stop referencing low blocks," Gerrard expressed concern while working as a pundit for the same broadcaster. "Low blocks have been used against Liverpool since my playing days. That's simply how it goes."
Gerrard wasn't entirely critical. "I'm genuinely happy for him," the former skipper acknowledged. "It must be challenging under such pressure. His tactical approach was excellent tonight. He merits significant praise and recognition."

While Gerrard was permitted the final say, his former Liverpool colleague Jamie Carragher found himself on the receiving end of Slot's wit.
"Arne, may I inquire about tonight's setup," Carragher questioned the Reds manager in his capacity as a CBS analyst. "In recent months you've attempted to improve the team continuously, and you've utilized various formations, could you clarify how it appeared tonight?"
"I struggle to take you seriously, Jamie," Slot responded with humor, "since you're the one who advised me to ensure we didn't concede so frequently.
"So I began doing that [adjusting his formations regularly] and people started complaining it became tedious, so I'm uncertain whether I should heed your advice."
