Suarez Reveals Retirement Plans Hinge on Messi's Future as Soccer Legends Face Crossroads

Luis Suárez stands among the finest strikers football has witnessed in the 21st century, yet at 38 years of age, the prospect of retirement looms ever closer.

As his current deal approaches its end following the 2025 MLS campaign, discussions about his potential retirement have grown more frequent. Prior to Inter Miami's Leagues Cup quarterfinal matchup against Tigres, Suárez addressed questions about what lies ahead.

"Regarding any decisions between now and year's end, football is unpredictable," Suárez explained. "You make plans that sometimes work out perfectly and other times don't. Right now, my focus is on savoring this chapter with Inter [Miami], and then we'll evaluate what comes next."

"I'm content, my physical condition is excellent, and I believe I'm contributing to the team's success. If the club [Miami] desires it, we won't encounter any obstacles [in contract discussions], nothing would prevent an agreement. We share the same vision of helping Inter continue its development as an organization, maintaining its appeal to attract quality players and supporting the league's [MLS] continued expansion, which matters greatly."

Suárez maintained some ambiguity while appearing quite open to prolonging his time in South Florida. Following these remarks, he netted twice to propel Miami into the Leagues Cup semifinals with a 2–1 triumph over Tigres.

With Lionel Messi unavailable due to injury, Suárez rose to the occasion and performed brilliantly. The special connection between these former Barcelona teammates extends beyond the field, with Suárez expressing his wish to conclude their careers simultaneously.

"I would be thrilled to hang up my boots alongside him, as we've discussed retiring together for years," Suárez revealed. "It's possible, though it hinges on both our contract situations. We'll each make the appropriate choice when the moment arrives."

"We're both getting on in years, and each will decide what feels correct individually, considering our personal circumstances. For my part, I won't rush into any decisions [at this moment]."

Since arriving at Miami before the 2024 MLS season began, Suárez has appeared in 74 matches for the Herons, establishing himself as the club's second-highest goalscorer with 38 strikes, trailing only Messi's tally of 59.
