Suarez Strikes Twice as Inter Miami Soars Past Tigres 2-1 to Secure Leagues Cup Semifinal Spot

Despite the absence of Lionel Messi, Inter Miami persevered and secured a thrilling 2-1 victory over Tigres to advance to the 2025 Leagues Cup semifinals, powered by a double from Luis Suárez.

The Herons established early control and translated their dominance onto the scoreboard after 23 minutes. A cross from Telasco Segovia struck Javier Aquino's hand, leading to a disputed penalty decision that Luis Suárez successfully converted for the opening goal.

Javier Mascherano's tactical approach proved highly effective during the opening period, as Miami's aggressive pressing disrupted Tigres' possession play. When the Mexican side managed to bypass the press, Miami flooded the middle of the park and outnumbered their opponents, effectively nullifying the influence of Juan Brunetta and Fernando Gorriarán.

Although appearing superior throughout, the Florida-based team couldn't extend their advantage before the break. The situation deteriorated when Mascherano received a red card for vehemently disputing the additional time decision. Additionally, Jordi Alba sustained a knee injury in a challenge and, despite initially continuing, collapsed early in the second period and was withdrawn in the 47th minute.

Gradually, Tigres gained momentum and began asserting control over the match. Eventually, Ángel Correa made his mark, collecting possession and surging past Miami's backline to create a one-on-one opportunity. The 2022 World Cup winner made no mistake, beating Óscar Ustari to net his tournament-leading fifth Leagues Cup goal and level the score in the 67th minute.

With five minutes remaining, Rodrigo De Paul's attempt struck Aquino's arm once more. Following a brief VAR review, Miami earned their second spot-kick of the evening. Suárez confidently stepped forward again, deceiving the goalkeeper to complete his double and regain Miami's advantage.

During the first minute of added time, Iván López nearly equalized for Tigres when his header struck one post, rebounded to hit the opposite upright, and bounced into Ustari's hands in a heart-stopping moment.

Tigres couldn't manufacture another opportunity as Miami successfully defended their lead to secure their semifinal berth.
