Super Bowl Sunday Shakes Up Liga MX Weekend Schedule in Surprising Ways

The Super Bowl, among the most significant sporting spectacles globally, will command attention this Sunday, Feb. 8, creating widespread effects that impact various sports and competitions, including Mexico's Liga MX.

The Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots will clash for NFL supremacy on Sunday in America's premier sporting showcase. However, even beyond U.S. boundaries, the Super Bowl attracts viewers from across the planet.

Mexico stands as no different, with data suggesting the country south of the U.S. hosts approximately 40 million NFL enthusiasts—the largest fanbase beyond American borders, according to Forbes.

Although soccer and Liga MX remain Mexico's dominant sport and competition, the Super Bowl and its expanding appeal will affect this weekend's match lineup. The Clausura 2026 fifth round occurs this weekend, featuring a notable and obvious scheduling adjustment.

No Liga MX matches will occur on Sunday, Feb. 8, clearing the way for Super Bowl LX to stand alone as the featured event broadcast in Mexico across two national television networks.

Throughout the Clausura 2026 campaign, matches have consistently taken place on Sundays, with Santos Laguna and Mexico City powerhouse Pumas typically hosting their fixtures on the week's final day.

This weekend, however, all nine Liga MX contests will unfold between Friday and Saturday, creating numerous simultaneous kickoff times.

Previously, Pumas vs. Mazatlán occurred simultaneously with Super Bowl LIX, leading to disappointing audience numbers. One year later, Liga MX chose not to compete against the NFL's showcase and adjusted their calendar accordingly—a strategy previously implemented in 2018.
