Supercomputer Forecasts Premier League Standings After Man City's Shocking First Defeat

Aston Villa have done what no other Premier League side managed this season. Unai Emery's men became the first team to not only defeat Manchester City, but also the first to take any points off them at all.

Enzo Maresca's City had been flawless across seven gameweeks, even as the guilty verdict loomed over the club following the September-October international break.

However, a disjointed display at Villa Park—with Gianluigi Donnarumma and Marc Guéhi among the worst performers—was capitalised on by loan striker Nicolas Jackson. Villa's goalkeeper Zion Suzuki also played a key role, producing six saves throughout the 90 minutes.

City still sit at the summit of the Premier League table, but this was the first indication of any vulnerability domestically this campaign. Arsenal, who kicked off shortly after, drew level on points with their fiercest rivals at the top, separated only by goal difference in second place.

The Gunners secured a win over Everton despite the challenging absence of key winger Bukayo Saka—who could be out until Christmas. Arsenal struggled for natural flair going forward, but it barely mattered as their deadly set-piece routine from last season made a welcome return.

Following those results and two additional Premier League fixtures on Saturday, Opta's supercomputer has refreshed its forecasts once again.

Arsenal's statistical probability of claiming the Premier League title—which would mean retaining an English top-flight crown for the first time since 1935—now exceeds 50%. Manchester City, meanwhile, are drifting, with their chances now below 35%.

One thing is certain: the title will go to one of these two clubs. Brighton & Hove Albion remain the only other side with a greater than 5% chance. Liverpool have just over a 3% shot at a second title in three years, while Chelsea's embarrassing loss to Tottenham Hotspur has further dented their prospects.

In the race for Champions League football, it would require a catastrophic collapse for either Arsenal or Manchester City to miss out, with both given qualification odds above 90%. A top-four finish guarantees a place in the competition, though the Premier League is expected to secure a fifth berth again thanks to the continued strong showing of English clubs in UEFA competition.

Currently, Brighton are rated better than evens to reach the Champions League for the very first time. Liverpool are close behind, with Chelsea also holding a qualification chance above 30%. Aston Villa sit at around 21%, after which the odds drop off steeply for Brentford, Leeds United, and Everton.

Manchester United's prospects of competing among Europe's elite next season continue to slide following a five-game winless streak in the Premier League, now sitting below 6%.

Back-to-back victories have transformed Tottenham Hotspur's outlook dramatically, with their relegation probability shrinking to just 14%. They are now projected to finish 13th—far from ideal, but a significant improvement on consecutive 17th-place finishes over the past two seasons.

Six clubs find themselves in far more precarious positions, each carrying a greater than 25% chance of dropping into the EFL Championship. Ipswich Town and Hull City are expected to avoid the drop but will be glancing nervously over their shoulders throughout the campaign. The situation remains fluid.

Crystal Palace (28%) and Nottingham Forest (29%) are in uncomfortable territory. Fulham are approaching a 31% relegation probability, while Sunderland and Coventry City both exceed 40%.
