Supercomputer Reveals Shock Relegation Predictions as West Ham's Defeat Shakes Up the Premier League Survival Race

West Ham United's survival hopes took a massive blow from one of the most consequential VAR decisions in Premier League history, and were arguably doomed by their dismal opening 20 minutes on Tyneside.

The Hammers arrived for Sunday's fixture having been handed a lifeline by Leeds United following their painful home loss to league-leaders Arsenal. Leeds' draw at Tottenham Hotspur kept the Lilywhites within reach, and a win at Newcastle United would have piled enormous pressure on Spurs ahead of their visit to Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.

Instead of delivering the kind of display that could have secured their top-flight status, West Ham regressed to their early-season form at the worst conceivable moment. Newcastle produced some of their finest football in their last home game of a frustrating campaign, though West Ham's carelessness, tactical setup and lack of defensive effort helped facilitate their hosts' impressive start.

Going 2–0 down left them chasing the game almost from the start, and while a brief window for an improbable comeback opened when Taty Castellanos struck brilliantly after William Osula had added his second, West Ham ultimately fell well short of the result they desperately needed at St. James' Park.

Here's how their defeat has reshaped the relegation battle, according to Opta's supercomputer.

Spurs fans departed the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Monday night feeling they had squandered a golden chance to take a significant stride toward safety, even as they ultimately clung on for a point against Leeds.

However, they will be feeling far more optimistic about their survival prospects after watching West Ham capitulate up north. The Hammers were woeful, with supporters heading for the exits as early as the 20th minute following goals from Nick Woltemade and the impressive Osula.

Now, Nuno Espírito Santo's side are virtually certain to be competing in the second tier next season. Their relegation probability has climbed to 93.83%, while Spurs now face just a 6.17% chance of suffering what was once an unthinkable fate.

Roberto De Zerbi's side require just a single point from their remaining matches to secure their survival.

Despite Sunday's encouraging result, the deep-seated pessimism that runs through every Spurs supporter means few will be mapping out summer transfer activity or envisioning the promising future that De Zerbi could bring. There have been clear signs of progress under the Italian, but two challenging fixtures remain.

Stamford Bridge has historically been an unwelcoming venue for Spurs, regardless of Chelsea's form. Fortunately, a win is not required on Tuesday night, though it would certainly be welcome. A decade on from the 'Battle of the Bridge' that sealed Leicester City's remarkable title triumph, the Lilywhites could clinch safety at the ground of their London rivals, who suffered defeat in the FA Cup final on Saturday.

If their miserable record in West London continues, however, it will come down to the final day.

West Ham host the Leeds side that kept the door open for Nuno's men last week, while Spurs take on an out-of-form Everton at N17. The Toffees' European aspirations have faded after going winless in their last six outings, but visiting sides have historically found little comfort when they travel to the Lilywhites' formidable stadium.
