Supercomputer Reveals Shocking Relegation Odds for Man Utd Following Crushing Chelsea Loss

Supercomputer Reveals Shocking Relegation Odds for Man Utd Following Crushing Chelsea Loss

Just when Manchester United fans thought their club had hit rock bottom, Lisandro Martínez proved there is still further to fall—at least for the time being.

The Argentine's inexcusably reckless red card deepened the misery during Saturday's 2–0 loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. The Red Devils have now gone nine games without a win across all competitions—the club's worst streak since 1988—and the pressure on Michael Carrick is mounting by the day.

United's ongoing crisis has sparked equal parts fury and disbelief, but at what stage do they genuinely begin worrying about Premier League survival?

Having collected just seven points from their first nine league outings—their only win coming against newly promoted Ipswich Town—they sit dangerously close to the drop zone. Staggeringly, they are just two points clear of bottom-placed Sunderland as November arrives.

With that context in mind, Opta's supercomputer has been recrunching its Premier League forecasts following United's latest stumble. So just how likely is it that they actually face the drop this season?

Given the caliber and financial muscle United possess, a relegation to the second tier remains highly unlikely in realistic terms. Yet many said the same about Tottenham Hotspur, who only secured their 17th-place survival on the very last day of the season just a year ago.

In the most ruthless division in world football, no club is too big to go down.

Opta would appear to concur. While United are not among the frontrunners to finish in the bottom three, they are still assigned a remarkable 20.77% probability of dropping into the Championship by season's end. More than two months into the campaign, that figure is truly alarming for the record 13-time Premier League champions.

They are projected to accumulate just 44.82 points over the course of the season, which the supercomputer estimates would place them 13th. Worryingly, that would still represent a two-place improvement on where United finished in the 2024–25 season under the combined tenures of Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim.

Given that the Red Devils entered this season with ambitions of cementing themselves as a Champions League fixture, it is deeply troubling that they are given just a 1.64% chance of qualifying for Europe's top club competition. Even their odds of reaching the Europa League stand at a meager 1.87%.

Naturally, fortunes can turn quickly, and a string of positive results would dramatically shift the supercomputer's outlook. The concern for United, however, is that things may deteriorate further before any improvement arrives.

Fixture List Promises More Disappointment for United

Whether or not Carrick is dismissed in the near term, United face a daunting run of fixtures in November, with five matches across two competitions surrounding the upcoming international break.

It starts in the Champions League on Tuesday, as United return to Old Trafford for a tricky clash with Roma. The Italian side are in excellent shape under Gian Piero Gasperini and are currently among the frontrunners in the Serie A title race.

Aston Villa then make the trip to Manchester in the Premier League. Though historically a favorable fixture for United, Unai Emery's side will almost certainly head into next weekend's contest as favorites.

Immediately following the international break, United travel to fierce rivals Liverpool. They did claim victory at Anfield under Amorim last season, but that was their first win there since January 2016—a period that also included humiliating defeats of 7–0 and 4–0.

United's subsequent trip to Lisbon for a Champions League fixture against Sporting CP could easily bring further heartbreak, as could their final November home game against Brentford, who have beaten the Red Devils in two of their last three meetings.
