Supercomputer Reveals Where Barcelona and Real Madrid Will Land in the 2026–27 La Liga Standings

The 2026–27 La Liga season is nearly upon us, with the new campaign set to get underway this weekend.

The season kicks off on Saturday, Aug. 15 with Alavés taking on Getafe, as six additional top-flight matches are scheduled across the opening round of fixtures.

Notably, Atlético Madrid, Barcelona, and Real Madrid will all be absent from the opening weekend, with the trio given a delayed start owing to the significant involvement of their players in the World Cup's final stages.

Consequently, Atléti will open their campaign at home against newly-promoted Málaga on Wednesday, Aug. 19, while Real Madrid travel to Espanyol three days later. Barcelona—who had eight players feature in the World Cup final—begin their title defense against Elche on Sunday, Aug. 23.

What to Look Out for This Season?

Defending champions Barcelona enter the new campaign chasing a third consecutive title—something no club has achieved since Pep Guardiola's Barça side between 2009 and 2011. A successful defense would also mark the club's 30th league crown overall.

Stability appears to be the theme at Camp Nou. Head coach Hansi Flick has penned a fresh two-year contract extension, and several key players return energized by their World Cup victory with Spain, including reigning La Liga Player of the Year Lamine Yamal, who will be partnered in attack by new arrival Anthony Gordon. That said, the club are still searching for a long-term successor to Robert Lewandowski.

Over at Real Madrid, the summer has brought sweeping changes following two seasons marked by underperformance and internal friction.

José Mourinho has returned to the touchline, injecting drama—and perhaps controversy—back into proceedings and making the Clásico a must-watch occasion once more. Six high-profile additions have reshaped the squad, with Marc Cucurella and Bernardo Silva bringing elite experience and a winning mentality. Teenage sensation Yan Diomande is the club's headline signing of the summer, with Florentino Pérez shattering Madrid's transfer record to secure the highly sought-after youngster.

Elsewhere, Diego Simeone faces mounting scrutiny at Atlético Madrid following a disappointing 2025–26 season, while Villarreal, Real Betis, and others look to close the gap on Spain's dominant trio.

Supercomputer Predicts the 2026–27 Season

Based on Opta's preseason forecasts—derived from running 10,000 simulated seasons through their 'supercomputer'—Barcelona are considered the most probable La Liga champions in 2026–27, with a 45.6% likelihood of lifting the trophy.

Real Madrid, by contrast, topped the simulated standings in just 31% of scenarios, placing them as a clear second favorite behind their arch-rivals—suggesting that Mourinho's pragmatic approach and his ability to manage a dressing room full of high-profile egos hasn't fully won over Opta's supercomputer.

Opta's Predicted La Liga Table 2026–27

Barcelona are given a 92% probability of finishing inside the top five this season, making their Champions League qualification virtually guaranteed. Real Madrid tell a similar story, with an 87% chance of securing at least a fifth-place finish.

Atlético Madrid are afforded just an 8.6% shot at winning their first title since 2021, while Villarreal are considered the next most realistic contenders with a 3.3% probability.

As Opta notes, "every team won the title at least 140 times out of the 10,000 simulations, though. So yes, we are saying there's a chance…"

That includes newly promoted Deportivo de A Coruña, who are rated as the side most at risk of relegation (29.2% chance of going down), followed by Elche (28.4%) and seven-time Europa League champions Sevilla (27.7%).
