Dominik Szoboszlai is reportedly on the verge of signing a contract extension at Liverpool, delivering a significant boost to the club.
The 25-year-old's existing deal runs until 2028, but The Athletic reports that he is expected to put an end to speculation surrounding his future by committing to a new long-term agreement.
The Hungarian international, who joined from RB Leipzig for approximately £60 million ($80 million) in the summer of 2023, was awarded Liverpool's Men's Player of the Season for 2025–26, having contributed 13 goals and 12 assists across all competitions.
There are also indications that Szoboszlai is considered a strong candidate to take over the vice-captaincy vacated by Andy Robertson, who departed Liverpool for Tottenham this summer.
From Uncertain Future to Key Man
At this point last summer, Szoboszlai's standing within the Liverpool squad was far from certain.
Despite contributing meaningfully to the 2024–25 Premier League title triumph—netting six goals in 36 outings—his place in the starting lineup appeared under threat heading into the new campaign following a busy summer transfer window.
£100 million ($135 million) signing Florian Wirtz seemed set to take over the No.10 role behind the striker—a position in which Szoboszlai had excelled—with further additions intensifying competition throughout the squad.
Yet as Wirtz and other new arrivals struggled to find their footing during a difficult period for the club, the Hungarian delivered his finest individual performances across multiple positions, including filling in as an improvised right back on several occasions. He also turned heads with a string of stunning strikes.
In February, Mohamed Salah hailed Szoboszlai as "one of the best players in the world," while skipper Virgil van Dijk spoke highly of his potential as a future captain.
"Obviously he has been very good [this season]," Van Dijk said. "He's also a player who I think can still make the next step in terms of being a leader for this team. It starts by leading by example and that's something he has done so far this season."
What Next for Szoboszlai and Liverpool?
Szoboszlai, who missed this summer's World Cup after Hungary failed to qualify, returned to training as part of Liverpool's pre-season preparations this week.
A number of key squad members are set to return later in the summer, having been granted additional rest time following their international commitments.
Liverpool are navigating a pivotal moment this summer, with Andoni Iraola appointed as manager to succeed the dismissed Arne Slot following a below-par campaign. Compounding the turbulence, Fenway Sports Group CEO Michael Edwards has unexpectedly stepped down from his oversight role at the club, while director of football Richard Hughes is reportedly set to depart for Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal.

Defender Jérémy Jacquet and winger Víctor Muñoz have arrived for a combined fee of roughly £80 million, with further signings anticipated before the new season gets underway—most notably a replacement for the now-departed Salah.
"Obviously we've signed two players already, but we need more players; we know this," Iraola told reporters during his first press conference earlier this week. "The club is working on this."
